Shane Hmiel - Road to Recovery

May God bless him and help him. I truly hope that he can improve with prayers and therapy

Wish Shane well. When I heard about the crash, my first thoughts were, "just when you thought it could not get any worse". In his crash, you could not hit that wall in a worse angle.

Racing's Dangerous...His parents knew that decades ago...

And water is wet.....

Whats wrong with you?

That is a sad deal. I have spent a lot of time at that track, and the Putnamville In speedway when I first got in to racing back in the late 70s.

I also fail to see any humor. I hate Narcotics abuse, but nobody deserves the pain he has endured.

The kid had talent too, was fast in full bodied cars, and open wheel cars.

The wreck was more of a tragedy than a giggle.
Best wishes for Shane.
He is a racer, that makes him a one of us, let's respect him.

These videos were recently released.

Holey ****, I didn't know he was in that bad of shape after the wreck. Thats too bad, just when he was getting his **** together and back on track.

I just watched these myself, today. I missed the SPEED airing.

I had no idea Shane was striving to be an Indycar driver.

Great story there. I watched him race a couple of races at Caraway in late models and you could see that he had that "drive" to win.

You know before he got into all the trouble i had visions of him taking over the Chance 2 car Truex was driving & then replacing Waltrip at DEI. I guess now i'm just glad for Steve that he's not dead...

Update on Shane Hmiel: Former NASCAR driver Shane Hmiel doesn't know if he will walk again. He doesn't know exactly how he will be involved in racing again. He doesn't even know why he's alive. There's one thing Shane Hmiel believes, though: He's lucky, despite an Oct. 9 accident in a Silver Crown car that damaged his brain and spinal cord. He might not know for another four or five years how much he will need the wheelchair he currently has to use, but the 31-year-old Hmiel has an incredibly upbeat attitude about his life. See full article at SceneDaily and a video from a NASCAR Race Hub episode at SPEED.(7-30-2011)

I wish Shane the best! He has been thru a lot and I am sure that he will recover as much as is humanly possible for him.

Seeing this story makes me think of drivers like Steve Park and PJ Jones who suffered severe brain injuries but survived. Park was fortunate to be able to race again. PJ is lucky to be alive.

Also, hats off to Ernie Irvan who overcame severe head injuries to race again!

This is a dangerous game, played by some very brave men and women.

It's incredible to me that so many people question whether or not top-flight drivers should be called athletes. Obviously, they should, IMO!!
