Shanghai to make F1 team

In a recent article I read. I came across some cool news. China will be hosting the Shanghai GP in 2004 and they are currently building an F1 team to contest in next years season. The team is looking for suitable chinese drivers to promote the team as well as their home race. The team is questionable for making the grid next year but are very certain about getting into Formula 1. Adding another team would definitely in my mind boost F1 bringing two more cars and drivers into the mix. This is just one more rumor in silly season and one more thing we will have to wait a while to find out.

Well this story turns out to have some truth behind it. Today McLaren signed a young Chinese driver to their testing roles and last week it was official as this Shangai team "launched". But it also seems that F1 glory will be on the back burner for the time being. The team did launch an all chinese team but in the category of F3000 and not F1. The team is looking for experience and said that a hard charge in to F3000 next year will be the first step towards F1 greatness.

really, thats pretty cool. Is it realistic to progress from 3000 to 1. I guess if you have the funds. So if they have their own team how come Mclaren signed a Chinese driver?

My guess is to "groom" him into an F1 star so when the Chinese team goes to F1 they will have a superstar driver to win. McLaren will have him on track all of the time to get him a ton of experience as well as fasten their progress on the new car. I really don't see a chinese driver driving for McLaren, do you?

My guess is its just a marketing ploy. You have a country will 1.3 billion people, a country that has the largest viewing audience. You have a person just affiliated with the team and thats HUGE exposure for your sponsors. Its why Jordan did what they did with CCTV. There is barely a Chinese driver even properly experiance enough to race in F3 or F3000 let alone even a full time test role in F-1. Especially with a team like McLaren. They dont dick around.

The only thing McLaren did was to get their names translated into Chinese characters. great marketing. Same with the Jordan team.
Havingsaidthis, there will be an all Chinese F1 team soon, don't you think?

If you take a look around the forum I believe the Chinese team is already a real thing. F3000 is their first target next year, and they could be in F1 as soon as 2005. The Chinese speak of this though as a well thought out process, so I look for these sneaky chinese people to get chinese drivers into testing roles with high rung teams to gather experience, while they send a team into F3000. These drivers who are testing are being preped to drive a state of the art car which China will be very thorough with. Two years designing one car and an almost unlimited budget will help them greatly.

As for this test with McLaren. McLaren do not exactly need sponsership I dont think but the idea of the rich get richer comes to my mind. The more money you can get the better in F1. So yes, getting "McLaren" into chinese characters will bring in millions in sponsership to the team. And maybe change that ugly car of thiers.
