Minimum and maximum shock pressure limits in 2 weeks: Until recently, NASCAR
only had a minimum height requirement, no maximum. Teams took advantage, jacking
up the gas pressure in the rear shocks to re-establish those aerodynamic
tendencies. In two weeks, NASCAR will begin mandating minimum and maximum shock
pressure limits for its Nextel Cup Series teams.

Looks to me like some teams have found a loop hole in the smaller spoiler rule and are taking advantage of it. Seems fair to me that NASCAR would put a rule in that would negate that advantage.

There's an unwritten rule (might be a "law") in auto racing. It's called finding a way around the intent of the rule.......happens all the time. In a very narrow sense of the word, no one was cheating.........but in a broad sense, it's cheating!! Everyone cheats in this sport.......it's NASCAR's job to find it and stop it. Seems like the game is still alive and well!!

A lot of teams have spent lots on money that is now down the drain with this new rule. I think it was RCR that spent over 5 million dollars for a machine so they could work on this.

Such research ain't cheap. A seven-post shock dynamometer, or "shaker rig" - a device that shakes a racecar, simulating the shock travel attained during a mobile test - costs $5,500 an hour. Of late, teams have been forced to use this technology just to keep up, much less get ahead.

That is now effectively wasted money. I can't imagine how Richard Childress must feel. He shelled out upwards of $5 million for an in-house shaker rig.

Someone figured it out........someone got busted!! :D If everyone played by the intent of the rule without trying to exploit a flaw then 5 million would not have been spent. But, then again, think about the help the economy received from that endeavor!! :) I actually love the game the teams and NASCAR play. :)

Folks, this is the exact reason why I have no sympathy for the team owners when they start to cry about the costs of racing and the lack of sponsorship dollars.

They've brought the whole situation down upon their own heads; with all the money that has been handed to them they've spent like kids in a candy store and now their sugar daddy's want to see at least some sort of return for all those dollars spent.
And the tears start fall.

Somebody want to give those multi-millionaire team owners a crying towel.

Don't forget that most of these owners have not invested their own money. It's come out of the sponsor's pockets and made more than a few folks quite well to do in the process.

they gonna start mandating tire pressures next year? started to get rediculous in my opinion

...and yet it's not mandatory for drivers to wear Their fire-retardant gloves.

Racing is about bending the rules to your advantage, Nascar has people who check for this and they just happended to figure this one out. I'm sure not going to cry for the owners, they bring it upon themselves.

I think some of y'all are missing something with the max shock pressure thing. NASCAR shortened the rear spoiler to reduce rear down force........it was part of the aero package rule change this season. The thinking behind it was that it would force the drivers to slow a little entering a turn. Someone comes along with a way around the rule by increasing the rear shock pressure so that the car does not squat as much as the cars that did not increase the shock pressure.........their spoiler is putting more down force on the rear tires and they don't have to slow as much as the others. It's a competitive advantage.......it negated the aero rule package. It's the game teams and NASCAR have been playing for years. NASCAR caught on and fixed it! :)

Ain't it fun? :bounce: :bounce:

Actually DE_W, yes it is. LOL  Now on to the next thing for as long as we can get by with it. :D

So just a thought....I understand suspension just enough to realize I don't understand it....

...but couldn't it be dangerous to limit the performance of a shock?

I think it would be smarter to address overall front to rear angles or rear height rather than limiting the performance of the suspension...

Just a thought...and I know it's probably wrong... :D

It probably is a little dangerous to limit performance on anything.........but what do you want NASCAR to do? Make the teams crush all their cars and start over with a completely new one? It's a rule to prevent teams from "cheating".

i dont look at changing shock pressure as cheating, i forgot who i saw on tv say nascar wants to control cost, but everytime they change a rule like this one teams will spend countless dollars to find a new advantage, then nascar takes this away from them, and that team is out $$$

Maybe NASCAR should be the ones responsible for building all of the cars, engines, doing the setups, etc. Then on race day have the teams randomly select a car, apply their decals and go racing. That would be a lot of fun to watch... B)
