What's going on? Winless in the conference, Carolina beats the Hokies at Blacksburg. It wasn't that long ago that VT was in the top five. Which begs the question, why do they rank teams so early anyway?

That's a very good question. Another one is, why do they rank Heisman hopefuls before the season? Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy and the like are still at the top of many "polls". These guys haven't performed nearly as well as Mark Ingram of Alabama. That guy is clearly having the best year of any college player and it isn't even close. Yet, because preseason polling had those other guys ranked ahead of him, they remain on top. Unfortunately, like most everything else anymore, the Heisman is becoming more of a popularity contest than an award for the best player. Tebow and McCoy seem like great guys and they are very good players, I like them both a lot from everything I have heard about them. But, they simply aren't doing what Ingram is doing this year.

I'm not sure I agree with you on this. Listening to ESPN Radio, Tim and Colt may have been the leaders, but as you said, their performances this year have been less than last year and ESPN has named several players who are now being looked at, including ND's QB, what's his name...Jimmie Clausen? I've heard several names being bantered about and I do believe those who vote are looking at them as well.

But you are right, the trophy has become a popularity award as witnessed by the TV coverage over the years. Its big money and every college begins to campaign about their player before the season begins and thus, much of the pre-season is based on what happened last year.

Being a Tarheel fan since a early age, I have never bet against them. I can honestly say I haven't been much of a Heels Football since moving to Bama, but I do pull for and watch them whenever possible. Last night really pissed me off. North Carolina should of got that a-s whooped last night in Blacksburg. In my College pickem league, I voted Tech to win, and what happens, Carolina pulls off a upset to win their first conference win. Also, now a Bama win in the opener looks a lot less impressive due to Tech's miserable stretch of games.

Good grief!!!
