Shootout or Duel?

This is my first post on this forum and we are debating whether to go to the Bud Shootout or to the Duel races. What are the advantages of each race that make it more fun than the other?

I believe I saw that the Duel races are 49 dollars general admission. If that's accurate, does that mean we can roam the grandstands for different vantage points, or would seating be specified?

Any other info you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks and Merry Christmas!!

Welcome Tony. I'd go to the duels if I had to chose personally. You get to see all the drivers and a little bit more racing.

Thanks for your reply Groundpounder. At the Duel, will be be able to roam around the side of the track with vendors and displays and walk to different parts of the track? We'd like to be able to view the pits from the stands if possible. Last year for the 500 I was disappointed because we never even had access to that part of the track (we were in the stands on the backstretch).

I'd go to the Duels too. More cars + two races (each almost as long as the Shootout) = more racing. I think the action is better in the Duels because of those teams that are trying to make the 500. Heck, I like the Duels so much I take a half-day of vacation from work to watch them live.

I haven't been to the Duels, but most Cup races are reserved seating. Depending on how many seats are sold, you may not be able to move around because there isn't anywhere to move to. However, I've been to several undersold or rain-delayed races where there were a large number of open seats. Moving around under those circumstances is usually accepted, at least until the person with the ticket to that seat shows up. If you just want different views of the track and don't care who's racing, you'll have better luck with the Trucks or Nationwide series. There are more unsold seats and they may even be general admission.

If you get tickets to the frontstretch you will have access and it is a lot better being able to see pit road. Frontstretch or backstretch though, Daytona is awesome.

For me, The Shootout's is cool because it's under the lights and it's the unofficial kickoff to the season.

The Duels are often more dramatic due to some drivers having to race their way in to the 500.

Either way you'll get to see a cool event.

Shootout. Everyone races there as well. Also there is more to do around the area that is NASCAR related. In addition to the race there are the race shops to visit and the HOF. Easy choice IMO.

The OP was referring to Daytona.

Thank you for your replies.

That's just what we want to do and my question is, since the Duel is general admission only (correct me if I read it wrong) won't we automatically be able to pick a seat in the front stretch grandstands? And if we can pick our seating, wouldn't it be a good idea to arrive early to stake our claim? I took some time to read everything on the speedway site but they really don't go in to detail. Since we've never been in the front stretch area we want to explore and see everything there is to see.
Thanks again!

I've bever been to either one but for me personaly I would go see the Bud Shootout just because I like Budweiser & i'd want to see all the fanfair that go's with that event...

...since the Duel is general admission only ...
If the Daytona web site says the Duels are general admission, then you definitely want to get there early. I haven't sat in general admission in a while, but here's what we used to do at other tracks. Call or e-mail Daytona first and make sure they'll let you mark seats this way.

Go in as early as you're allowed to enter. Bring a cheap blanket and a roll of duct tape, but don't bring anything else in yet; you won't be staying. Select the seats you want and then tape the blanket down over those seats. Other fans will recognize this as meaning someone has chosen those seats. Go back to the entrance gate but don't leave. Ask the person at the gate if you can 'pass out' at that gate or if you must go to a special 'pass out' gate. He'll give you a re-entry stub or hand stamp, or direct you to the pass out gate where someone else will give you the stub or stamp. Now you can wander around the souvenir trucks, displays, etc., while the blanket 'guards' your seats.

If your blanket is big enough, mark off an extra seat so you'll have some elbow room (but don't get greedy). Don't lose your re-entry stub / wash your hand stamp off. Don't lose your original ticket; you'll need both it and the stub / stamp to get back in when you're ready to settle down for the race.

I appreciate all you guys helping out with your advice and as suggested I'll call the speedway with any more questions. I hope you all enjoyed Christmas and thanks again!
