Should NASCAR slow the cars down?

The link is now fixed, sorry about that.

I think this is a pretty good idea. Not only would it make for more exciting racing, but it would be safer, and that's also a huge issue right now. I think NASCAR needs to do something soon, because they will start driving their fans away if they don't fix the racing.

I sugested that on another tread. Use less horse power on the superspeedways. Daytona and daga. That way you could do away with the plates.

What idea does everyone think Nascar should do to the cars to make them slow down? besides the spoiler or downforce. Be specific. Mabey only a certain size gear in the car?

I like the aero change idea. But instead of just a strip across the roof, why not change the nose of the cars - make them more flat across the front. How about making them fit exactly the production car's nose? Stand the windshield up more... Don't allow any tape across the grills.

I am just really happy with what we allready have. I see no problem with anything.

I had heard that in NHRA they limit the gearing in top fuel. Don't know if it is true or not, but it might be a place to start. I would first start though with making the body fit the original body templates. Limiting the tape on the grill would be nice, but they need that to regulate temperatures. Would go for about anything that would slow the cars down and get rid of the stupid plates.

Race...go slower...Race....go slower. What's the definition of race again. Side by side? Back in what many refer to as the Golden Age of racing drivers would be lapping the field without shame. Return the cars to how the manufacturers make them. Allow the teams to put what they want on the track as long as I can buy it off the showroom. The manufacturers benefit as they get to see how a "real" car really behaves. The fans benefit from better races. Take the engineers out and return the drivers. If I want to watch a slow side by side race I'll watch the Tour de France. Or, maybe those bicycles going 35-40 mph is too fast for some...

if they are going to slow them down, they shouldn't do it with roof strips, they look kinda dumb. Instead of letting the cars being so aerodynamic, why not just make the cars more boxy like they were in the 70's and 80's? I agree that hte greenhouse area of the car does need to be bigger. If it keeps gettting smaller, drivers like Mikey aren't going to be able to fit in the cars.

the only reason they run with plates on is because of the fans, not drivers.
so here's a idea.
1. back the stands up about 60 feet away from the track.
2. put plexiglass infront of the stands
3. make the fans wear goggles & hard hats
problem solved. now take off them d*mn plates:D

Sorry, I have to do a little flaming here... :D :D :D :D

This thread proves that Richard Childress is as big as a knucklehead as Jack Roush is. Slow down the cars???? What, we don't want to see racing anymore? It's bad enough they do it at Daytona & 'Dega. Slow down the cars??? Why don't NASCAR just race Big Wheels instead? Gosh, the F1 cars, the CART cars & the IRL cars race a hell of a lot faster that stock cars. Yes, they have their problems going at those speeds, but there problems are mostly limited to driver error, mainly because they use all the technology available to them where NASACR refuses too.

K...flaming is over.

How wish I could be so big a "knucklehead"...............

Attempting to compare the speeds of CART, IRL, or F1 cars to those of the Winston Cup cars is pointless. Kinda like comparing the speeds jet liners and jet fighters. IF trying to make the point that going as fast as possible is the definition of racing, that is one thing. But you cannot do it by comparing completely different automobiles. To take that to its most ridiculous conclusion, only the land speed record cars are racers and the cars of CART, IRL and F1 are hopelessly slower.

One comment on the aero package of roof strips and such as used a few years back. The assertion that it would increase the stability of the cars if fraudulent. One of the big reasons they were eliminated was because according to the drivers they made the cars hideously unstable. Same with the 5 and 5 rule of a few years prior to that.

I have always argued the unpopular opinion that more speed is not that relevant to 'racing'.

NASCAR would have a tough time producing a race as close and interesting as the Kentucky Derby for instance.Isn/t that a race, after all?

This whole speed mythos makes it colorful and an easy sell to advertisers, but it also adds danger and risk that seem unneccesary,IMO.Put the cars at a manageable speed and allow the 'man' in the man-and-machine equation to play a larger role is my thoughts on this issue.

As for how to accomplish this I will leave to better brains than mine. :)

I must not being seeing something. I don't see how slowing down the cars will solve anything? I don't want to see them running 300 mph at Talladega, but the example was used of the IROC race at Chicago was more exciting that the Cup & Busch races..which is true. But those are 12 cars that are set up the same by the same group of people. You won't see that in Cup & Busch...at least I don't think so? But as we see at the restrictor plate tracks, bunching up the cars is a recipe for diaster, which for the most part IROC cars run in packs.

I think the boring racing is a product of the cookie cutter tracks...we'll see a lot better racing this weekend at NHIS.
