Should the Field Be Expanded

I agree with the author. In fact, I agree with Junior's assessment that it should only be the top 5. If you want at chance at the Cup, you'd better kick ass and take names.

^ i also agreed with the author, but unlike you i dont agree with dale jr "assessment" that it should be only the top 5.. i mean go figure how many good drivers would get left out? that includes jr..heck he would miss the chase for the cup every year

Well, if you're in the top 5, then obviously you are the best of the best. If you don't make it, then raise your game. It would mean that "good" isn't good enough.

So would Jeff Gordon. :)

I actually had not thought of reducing the field to 5 teams but the more I think about it the more I like the idea. Too many teams are racing just to make the top 10, reduce it to 5 teams and you will see more teams going all out.

I kind of like it the way it is now. If you reduce the number to five, there will always be those who say do away with the chase altogether, which would put us right back where we were, points racing. Yeah, there will be those guys at the bottom of the 10 who will point race, but it's getting so close that a guy has to really push if he wants to stay there and those guys trying to make the top ten will push even harder. If anything, I'd say reduce the number of races for the chase to five. That'd really make for some exciting racing at the end of the season.

it is actually a good idea ot make it only the top 5 and i think that could even make the chase more interestint

Good idea.

And make the last five races short tracks like Bristol and Richmond.

Ought to be plenty of mayhem that way. :)

See what you started TexasRaceLady, seems that 5 may be the popular number. :)

Pit Stops by Tony Fabrizio:

Kenseth

• WHO'S HOT: It's probably too little too late, but 2003 Winston Cup champion Matt Kenseth has put together a run of seven top-11 finishes in the last eight races. Kenseth ranked 24th in the standings when his surge began. He's up to 15th. With only five races before the cut-off, though, he still has a lot of ground to make up.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
• WHO'S NOT: Former CART team owner Cal Wells' PPI Motorsports may rank as the most disappointing full-time team in Nextel Cup. Bobby Hamilton Jr. hasn't finished in the top 20 since the third race of the year, and he's a dreadful 37th in the points.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
• HE SAID IT: ''Walking up to him and seeing that smile on his face will be a vision burned in there forever, knowing that this day is so special to him.'' - Greg Zipadelli, Tony Stewart's crew chief, on a memory he'll take from Sunday's Allstate 400 at the Brickyard victory.

I don't like the chase. Sorry. It was devoloped to increase TV ratings. Seems that it does, but I don't care about ratings. And nobody cares than I don't like it. Guess we're even. :growl:

I guess it's good ratings and network tv or no ratings and PPV. Although I think there may be room for both.

I think Kenseth will have to win some races 'cause Stewart isn't letting up and the chance of being within 400 points of the leader isn't looking good.

You really don't? I love it. It's so much more interesting than the year Matt ran away with it all. At this point in that season there was already next to nothing left to talk about. Now it all resets and we'll always (assuming the Chase stays, of course) have an interesting last 10 races. That is something you just could not count on under the old system. But you knew that. ;)

i like it but towards the end of the season if the first couple of drivers in the standings are really close then it becomes nerve racking

I guess I'm just different. I love each and every race. If one of the drivers were to be good enough to secure the championship half way through the season, I would still watch and enjoy the remaining races to the last lap. So what would you call me? I say I'm a race fan, but not necessarily a championship fan.

On the other hand, I have friends who hardly watch any regular races. In their view, that's just qualifying. They wait for the chase.

eliminate the chase all together. make the last 10 races worth more to the top ten in the ways of a sublimental, but have them keep the same points for the entire season. either that or make the championship at the 10 to go point and have the last ten for something else.

why are you all complaining? the way it is now is fine..i dont see nothing wrong with it.

we are not complaining.....well maybe just a little. If we did not complain they may just as well shut down the site and go home. :)

Wouldn't it make more sense for your friends to watch only the last lap of those races? All the previous laps are only to get to the last one.

I'd say it makes you hard core! I love the races, too, but if things are decided it is MUCH less interesting and I'll channel surf. Especially when football starts! :beerbang:

i only channel surf during football like between 2 different games

I've never really cottoned up to "The Chase" concept but I got over it. I wouldn't mind some tweaking to add drivers within 500 points, but let's get used to the whole concept of a chase for the championship before any more drastic changes are made. JMO

I agree Kat! Gotta give it more than one year to see how it's really doing.

Getting used to it will probably only encourage Brian to make more changes on his whim.:)

I'll never get used to it. You race all season. That's what the championship should be based on. Not just a quest for part time fans and TV ratings.
