How many fans really like the green-white-checkers finish?

Like the principle of the matter, but would also like to see more laps. G/W/C is basically running 2 caution laps at high speed... not much room to compete with number one... unless they screw it up.

Races finished under caution for years. It's like the lucky dog, sometimes it benifits you, sometimes it doesn't. I guess I'm the only one who doesn't like the rule. There doesn't have to be a last lap battle to be a good race.

I like it as it's much better than the alternative, but I'd like to see something like 5 extra laps rather than 2.

Do away with the G/W/C and stop counting caution laps. And, especially do away with the green/yellow starts where the laps count.

The G/W/C was implemented to keep the neew generation of "race fans" excited. And to pacify Earnhardt fans, but in reality, the G/W/C SUCKS !!!

As does the "lucky dog" rule.
In the real world, teams and people must work for everything they get. The G/W/C and "lucky dog" give drivers an advantage they never earned.

How right on the money Cypress Trout is !!!!! You don't need artificial methods and a last lap battle to make a good race.

LOL!!! :bsflag:
I knew it! What a joke!

Blame Earnhardt and his fans for g/w/c.
Lol!!!

Lol!! Whats next?

Sorry, but it is NOT out of the realm of possibilities. I'm sure it's not the ONLY reason, but it does lend itself to more than likely being PART of the reason. The G/W/C was put into use for the cup races after Jr. lost to Jeff Gordon with a yellow flag finish. Or, was that just coincidence?

It was the fact that the two biggest names in the sport were going at it and it finished under yellow. If Gordon had lost, I still say there would be g/w/c today.

And, I wouldn't disagree with you. But, you have to look at it the way it DID end. And, therefore the G/W/C was put into place. Like it or not, it happened.

If I'm not mistaken, G/W/C started in the truck series a few years back. Due to the fact that they wreck more and there were too many finishes under the yellow.

But the G/W/C in trucks was not limited to 1 time. They raced until they finished. This led to a lot of trucks being torn up in the final laps. The one race where there were 5 G/W/C before there was a winner was probably what changed NASCAR's mind on this. If you don't count caution laps you would still have a run to the finish without a contrived G/W/C finish. Also, I never felt someone should get 5 points for leading a lap under caution. Where's the racing in that?

The rule to bring a G/W/C into place was being made to keep "new fans" excited.
It was the intent of NASCAR to implement the G/W/C in July at Daytona, the halfway point of the season.
After the debacle and disgusting display at Talledega by spectators (note the absence of calling them race fans) as reported by people in attendance and news media footage, the vast majority of those throwing items were wearing red, designating one specific driver, NASCAR chose to implement the change effective immediately.

Therefore, the logical conclusion is the change to advance the G/W/C rule by two months was made to pacify Earnhardt fans.

The only thing I disagree with is the fact that you didn't put the word "some" in that sentence. The rule was put in place to pacify SOME Earnhardt fans. I hate the G/W/C, more manufactured entertainment.

Right you are Bowtie !!!!!!!!

Fortunately, not all who like Dale Earnhardt care for the G/W/C and neither do all condone the disgusting display carried out at Talledega.

I have to admit, I was ashamed to be an 8 fan that day.

As barely said, stop counting caution laps, that'd be great.

You are so right Whiz, as usual, but those were not race fans, they were drunk fools who if some way possible should never be allowed back in a race track for as long they live. That was absolutely disgusting!!! I am just proud I wasn't there that day.

I think even it it was between Ricky Craven and Mike Skinner they still would of done the GWC.

I still belive to this day if then dang (mostly JR) fans did not litter the track with cans and such they would of gotton it to go green.

I read the majority of the junk on the track was pepsi cushions and pepsi cans, thrown by the pepsi crowd that pepsi itself planted in the audience.

Fininshing under caution is awful..I would like to see a 5 lap race to the finish.

That was the Pepsi 400 @ Daytona. 15 won that race.

The race that really got the gwc going was the 2004 Aarons 499 @ Talledega. When Jeff passed Jr, and as soon as he did the 25 crashed. And most of the stuff on the track was Beer cans. (and yes Dale JR, there was a lot of Bud cans)

Thanks for the correction. If Jr and Jeff are responsible for the green-white-checkers then I say 'thank you' to them both. And I say 'thank you' to all the drivers who have helped to make it a better and safer sport. I especially want to thank Jeff Burton for making Nascar institute the rule that 'you must be on the track to win a race.' Totally brilliant move by Frankie Stoddard!! :beerbang:

As far as the fans go...guess we need to take away their cans and cushions.

So, the general feeling for all is... No more G/W/C, no more points for laps lead during cautions, and a 5 lap shootout to end a yellow flag race? How would that make all of you feel? Better?

I could live with it.

I'll drink to that if you throw in 5 points for the pole.....
