If you don't like math, please leave now. ;)

Everyone knows how important it is to NASCAR to have Jr in the chase. It's so important to the boys in charge, they actually came out and said how important it is to the sport for Dale Jr to run good. But then they came up with the WC system, and it could come back to bite them and it wouldn't take much for it to happen.

Jr sits 9th, with just 728 points. He's within range of Joey Logano knocking him out of the top 10, and Joey sits in 18th place. But with Kez sitting just 39 points behind Jr, it wouldn't even take anything near that dramatic. Here's the nightmare...

Tony picks it up at 2 of his favorite tracks and jumps past Jr. Kez keeps performing well and gets 2 top 10's. If Jr has just one bad race and one ok race, he'll be out of the top 10. Then, the nightmare begins.

Menard is in the top 20 with one win. Ragan and Ambrose are just 4 points back. All 3 could end the season in the top 20. So, the most popular driver in NASCAR could be knocked out of the chase by...

A guy who won a fuel mileage race...or..
A guy who has only won on a road course...or..
A guy who won by being pushed by his teammate.

And it all could be made possible by the guy Jr gave a huge opportunity to, Brad Keselowski.

----------------------------

Since I'm on a math kick right now, here's the Gordon situation.

Right now, Gordon has 782 points, so if he finishes last in the next 2 races, he'll have 784 points on the regular season.

Kez now has 689 points, so Brad could pass Gordon by getting max points (48) in the next 2 races. Brad would end the season with 785 points. Gordon is within the range of positions 7 - 10, so if they end with more than 784 points each, Jeff is out of the top 10. Since Jeff has 2 wins, he would get a WC spot.

What about Bowyer? He has 688 points, just 1 point behind Kez. If positions 7 - 10 pass Gordon and BOWYER gets max points in the last 2 races and Gordon finishes last, Bowyer and Gordon will be tied with 784 points. Assuming Kez's 3 wins get the first wildcard, Bowyer and Gordon will be tied in points for the last spot. They will also be tied for wins with 2 each. In that case, Gordon will get the spot based on his 8 top 5's and Bowyers five top 5's.

Aghhhh! My head hurts now! I HATE Math.

Oh, guess I shoulda stopped reading when you said "If you don't like math, please leave now."
:D

It doesn't matter if Jr is in the chase or not. He won't do anything in it once it starts anyway.

...except take up space... ;)

Nice work, FB! I am sure that the nightmare you refer to is NASCAR's nightmare, right? Oh, and the nightmare for his fans too.

I have nothing against Joonyer! I am all for there being more over-paid under-achieving athletes in professional sports!

Sadly this is true. It is also true for most of the teams stuck 6-10. Honestly Kesolowski is the only driver outside of the top5 who could probably honestly make a run for the championship. Well, I take that back JG has been running strong as of late, but you guys get my point.

Maybe the chase should be the top5, plus 2 wild cards where whatever 2 drivers between 6th and 20th with the most wins make it into the chase.

Maybe we shouldn't have a Chase at all, how about that? The championship should be awarded to the most consistent driver throughout the season. Keep the current points system, but get rid of this frickin joke of a Chase. It continues to have more gimmicks added to it every year and drivers sandbag it once they know they are in. It is one of the worst things Nascar, has done to the sport.

I haven't kept up with it this year, but does anybody know what the points would like look this year under the "pre chase" format?

No driver outside the Top 10 in points after 26 races is going to EVER win a championship - no matter what the format. But the resetting of the points before race 27 has been harmful to more than one driver.

I don't think it's necessary (the chase, that is) but then I am a person who will watch all 36 races anyway. It does tend to draw in the casual fan who may not make a point of watching NASCAR on a regular basis.

That's the answer!

It would make my day if the drivers who HAVE NOT WON fell out of the chase and the drivers who HAVE WON moved in......but thats just me Racings about Winning not settin yourself up for the post season or whatever you want to call it

wonder if the chase format will change if jr doesn't get in? why can't nascar just designate jr as a wildcard and the other drivers can battle it out to race their way into it. then we don't have to keep changing the format. :)

My prediction will be that eventually they will make the rule "the winner of the most popular driver award from the previous season will automaticaly make the chase the next year" lol

But that would end up putting Danica in the chase after too long. We need Jr in the chase so how would we do that?

this is too easy. nascar affirms it's commitment to affirmative action and includes the most popular male and female. :)

Who would you rather have as the leader of NASCAR?

A: Bernie Ecclestone

B: Brian France

I'd choose B 100 times out of 100

It could be worse, y'all...
