NASCAR announced today that they will now have single-file restarts when the race reaches 20 laps to go instead of 10 but the "lucky dog" will still go to first driver laps down until 10 laps to go. NASCAR said that the change was so the driver could have better racing late in the races.

I don't have a problem with this new rule, but once again, NASCAR is changing rules whenever they feel like it. At least this rule came into affect before the season started.

You didn't get your copy of the NASCAR Rulebook?

barely - why is this so important to implement now when it wasn't a month ago so teams could become more familiar with the rules?

I think restarts need to be like they were in the shootout anyways. With the lucky dog rule, you don't need the lap down guys getting in the way causing wrecks no matter how many laps are left. Let the race leaders go off into turn 1 side by side and let them figure it out. I think you'd see more side by side racing like they are always looking for. Also, make it manditory(spelling?) that luck dog recipients start at the end of the longest line still. Especially at short tracks. How many times has someone gone a lap or two down and come back to finish top 5? That would be great if they didn't get 2 laps handed to them via lucky dog.

This is a good rule but i belive the lap down cars should never start along side the lead lap cars. Now that we got the lucky dog rule they can have there own little race with out involving the leaders.

agreed. or maybe make the top 10 spots be 2x5 formation THEN lap down cars on inside.

Is this just for Daytona or for the entire season?

Single File Restarts with 20 laps to go: NASCAR will use single-file lineups for restarts with 20 laps remaining in all three national series this year, NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton said today. The previous rule called for single-file restarts with only 10 laps remaining. All other restarts had lapped cars on the inside lane. NASCAR is still allowing for the first driver one-lap down [Lucky Dog] to get back on the lead lap until there are 10 laps left in the race. Pemberton said the rule was to allow the leaders more room to race following a caution in the waning laps. “We’ve been talking to the crews, teams and drivers and we felt like it was a time to make a change,” Pemberton said. “We haven’t taken away the lucky dog and haven’t hurt anybody from getting a lap back.”(SceneDaily)(2-22-2009)

i like this rule ... and I would like to see ARCA follow suit on this especially considering lapped cars were responsible for a couple of the serious accidents at Daytona.

I like the idea. I wonder how it will affect the decision to pit late in the race. Now the position you are in when you return to the track is your actual position not that plus how many are in the lap down line next to you.

thats what i was thinkin..... if there is a caution with 20 to go, it will open lots of new possibilities...... wouldn't wanna have to make that call..lol. but hey, at least it will be fairer, i've seen several instances where a car plus laps down clog up the feild, and keep the third or fourth place guy from bein able to get up to the first and second place cars......
Then again, a double file for the top 20, lap cars behind that...... now that would be interesting.....lol. kinda like a Winston shootout.....woo hoo....lol
