Question to everyone........

How do you remember popcorn being cooked at home when you were young?

The first time for me was back in the sixties [early 60's] ...
my older sister put some lard in a big pot and turned on the heat and started adding popcorn while shaking the pot and when she got through, melted some butter and poured it over the corn and mixed it real good and then salted the hell out of it.

Is it any wonder that the folks my age are droping from heart attacks...lol :D

:lurking: :lurking:

In a skillet on the stove. Lots of shaking back and forth required.

I worked with a woman whose teenage daughter had never seen popcorn made any way except a microwave. Bacon too for that matter. :(

I bought some Jiffy Pop a few weeks ago just for the hell of it. IM28's 9.84 year old freaked.

Just think what they would do if they seen an old 78rpm or a 33 1/3 lp....lol

:D :p

I have about 2500 LPs. The 9.84 year old is used to those. Also have a reel to reel recorder and a 1966 Wurlitzer jukebox with 45s in it, so she can't claim CD or MP3 only experience!

We went camping once and we had that Jiffy Pop, that stuff is good:)

I'm a popcorn-aholic, myself. Big, heavy skillet, lot's of butter and salt. LOL

I found a neat popcorn popper for real popcorn. It's called a Whirly-Pop. And the best real popcorn around is White Cat Corn.

I remember when I was younger, we had one of the popcorn makers that had the twirlly thing attached to the lid that kept the popcorn kernels from sticking to the bottom of the cooker. Lots of butter oil in the cooker with kettle corn seeds and you had to stand there and turn this thing to keep the corn from sticking and burning. It made some of the best popcorn ever. Then we got one of those hot-air popcorn makers (wasn't quite as good). Now it's just the quick microwave kind.

When I was young, we had popcorn almost EVERY night. We did the pan on a burner with lost of shaking too!:D And we used lard too!! Of course we were on a farm and grew the corn and rendered the lard. :)

MMMMMMMMM, my favorite food!!!

Way back when, mom popped the corn in a cast iron skillet, added melted real butter.

Now, I melt real butter with a touch of olive oil (so the butter won't burn) in an OLD pressure cooker (Presto) with the steamer thing off.

Pressure cookers can make a pot roast or stew that tastes like heaven. Red beans and rice too :D

I can't stand microwave popcorn, gotta use the stove top popper, I got it as a gift a few years ago. When do the Boy Scouts start selling popcorn again, anyone know?

We use the stove top method every year, and string the popcorn with cranberries to put on our Christmas tree. Looks a lot better than anything you can buy as garland, plus adds an old timey feel to the wooden ornaments etc we use. (Remember, according to Paul, I'm a Luddite :p and so we do lots of old timey stuff in the TWF/IM28 household)

Ooooh, now I'm hungry. Tonight I will be getting out the old heavy pot and make some real popcorn. Lots of real butter and salt. So bad for you, yet tastes so good. :chef:
