Smaller plates.

That is ridiculous. They was only going faster because they kept their momentum in the corners due to the smoother surface. The drivers said that their straightaway speed had not increased. Suprised 1/64th of an inch would make a 2-4 mph difference.

From Jayski's...

NASCAR issues smaller Resitrctor Plate's at Talladega: NASCAR will issue restrictor plates with smaller holes for the rest of the UAW-Ford 500 weekend as teams scrambled Saturday morning to get their cars ready for qualifying. The new restrictor plates will have four holes of seven-eighths of an inch in diameter, one-64th of an inch smaller than the ones used in practice Friday when #24-Jeff Gordon reached a speed of 198.689 mph in the opening session at Talladega Superspeedway. The change should slow the speeds by 2-5 mph, according to crew chiefs,. Teams were informed of the change Saturday morning. There are no practice sessions left on the schedule and the cars will be impounded after qualifying. NASCAR officials are expected to address the media concerning the change later this morning. The speeds are higher than they have been at Talladega because of the repaved surface, which is much smoother than the old surface.(SceneDaily.com)(10-7-2006)

There's a chart here to give an idea of how much even a small change in restrictor plate venturi size affects speed...

http://www.jayski.com/stats/restrictor.htm

We all know that a smaller hole will slow down a car, But the chart is an inaccurate tool for that purpose. Track tempature, wind and other aero adustments also come into effect for the pole speed.:D

You must be looking at a different chart than I was able to bring up.
According to the one I see, restrictor plate size directly affects top speed. :)

The restrictor plate has killed more drivers thhan its saved... Plain and simple...

Hmmm, then I guess that there have been hundreds of drivers killed huh? I'm not quite sure how many guys have driven since Earnhardt has been dead, but maybe you know of the hoards that have been killed.

I just don't quite understand why you people who hate plate racing continue to watch those races. If I hated those races as much as y'all did, I'd be doing something else on the days they raced. As I said to someone else, why not go watch yer kids play soccer and quit yer bitchin. :beerbang:

Cause I hate soccer worse and I don't have any kids :)

Well then why the hell do you watch something else that you don't like? I don't think that anyone is holding a gun to your head making you watch it.

So these plates was supposed to slow these cars down? Pitcommand had 16 cars clocked at over 200mph and 6 was over 201 with Joe Nemechek with the fastest lap of 201.664mph.

No I saw the same chart,
 we all know that already, but look at todays race. CARS OVER 200mph. Track temp, track conditions, wind, body finess all make up for that.
