CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — The most well-known driver in the winged-sprint car race Tuesday at Canandaigua Motorsports Park almost became the show-stopper.
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Tony Stewart was right at the center of a crash that involved 15 cars on Lap 7 of the 25-lap feature race on the half-mile oval dirt track. Stewart, seen later chatting with crew members of other teams, said in an interview over the track's public address system that the accident was his fault.

Alysha Ruggles, a 19-year old driver from Canandaigua, was taken to Thompson Hospital in her hometown because of pain in her lower back caused by the accident. Witnesses said that Ruggles' car hit the wheel of another, went into the air 20 to 30 feet and came to a stop 50 to 60 feet later.

"It was a melee of stuff going on there," sprint car driver Paul Habeck of Fairport, said. "A lot of dirt flying, cars going every which way, upside down.
"I came into Turn 1 and saw a car flipping towards me. It was pretty crazy. We came through it unscathed. I had to do a lot of weaving to get through it."
Crew members for the car driven by Paul Kinney of Canastota, N.Y., said that they believed Kinney was taken to Rochester General Hospital. Kinney had pain in his back and legs but his exact injuries were unknown.
"I have never seen anything this bad in a sprint car race, I don't think, or this many cars being taken out in one wreck," said sprint car driver Mike Stelter of Webster. "At least Tony Stewart manned up and said he caused the wreck.
"He tried to put the car where it didn't belong. He said it was his fault for trying to force the issue, I guess is a good way to say it."

So ,that's a bad thing ? Right?

Not in a 25 lap race that takes less then 6 minutes w/out a yellow:)

You know, here's a guy that risks his Cup career to go run local dirt tracks because of his love for sprint cars. I think it's cool and I respect him for it. Sometimes sh!t happens.

Corcoran said Stewart’s appearances are good for the track.
“Basically it packs the house,” the promoter said. “It generates a lot of new fans. Last year we had him here in August and after that there were a lot of new people coming to races.”
Livonia resident Glen Jensen is a regular at Canandaigua’s Saturday night races and is a big fan of Stewart. Jensen said he has seen all of Stewart’s races in Canandaigua and plans to be there again in August.
“It’s nice because you can get up close with the drivers,” Jensen said. “Tony is one of the only ones in the sport who will come down and actually sign stuff for you.”

I kinda like tony, and always enjoy when a racer returns to his roots.

but I have to admit that I've seen stewart in a dirt late model at Knoxville show very little respect for other racers and their equipment. I hope that isn't the case this time. and certainly feel for the racers that were injured.

will readily admit that what I love about dirt racing is the driver has to go hard from start to finish. but it's hard to explain the difference that wrecked cars and torn up equipment means to grass roots racers when compared to multi-millionaires.

I know what I've seen. and there are other nascar racers that show a lot more respect when they enter an event where they could afford to buy everything in the pits and the track they race on.

and it has nothing to do with where tony came from. i'm well aware of that. my point is where he is now. I could care less if he costs rick hendrick a racecar on sunday. but joe schmoe quite often can't afford to rebuild and be back on track next Saturday night.

Tony Stewart was the catalyst for a crash in a sprint car race that left a 19-year-old female driver injured.

Tony Stewart walked away from a wild sprint car crash Tuesday that left a female driver hospitalized.

The incident occurred during a race at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park when Stewart was attempting to complete a pass for position. In the resulting melee involving 15 vehicles, 19-year-old Alysha Ruggles ran up on the back of another car and flipped 20 to 30 feet in the air, according to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.

I started a thread about this a few days ago, but some wanker in stealth mode deleted it with no reason given. Lets see what happens to this one.

Hmm, looked like a racing deal to me. I would more blame the front row car that drops back and clogs the high line by not moving up.

I agree, definitely the outside guy's fault on that one. He should've kept high.

I don't understand why the original thread was deleted......it's like blaming Smoke for this accident, bullsh!t:mad:

I'm the wanker that deleted the original thread. It was a good discussion until some posters went ballistic and started in with the name-calling. I will not tolerate flaming other posters by calling them names I do not care to repeat.

And when several posters send a message about the name-calling, I have to do something.

Now, discussion is welcome.

As for the wreck, Tony fully admitted that he tried to put the car into a place where it didn't fit and took the blame. I do hope he's contributed to the girl's medical expenses.

I watched that video 5 times. I didn't see anything that looked like anybody's fault to me from that angle.

I'd put blame on whoever started outside front row and fell back. Yea, tony tried to fit where he couldn't, but that hole should have been there. I'd call 2 way blame.

I guess straightening out the offender and deleting their posts is too hard to do.

Seriously, it sounds real hard to do.

I guess so:rolleyes:.....it just pisses me off when whole threads are deleted instead of just deleting the posts that are inappropriate.

I always miss the good stuff.

Glad to hear the young girl was released from the hospital
Depends on which article you read. a driver went to the hospital, but it wasn't a girl. One article said she went to the ambulance and left, complained of back pain later. Anybody that has gone to a dirt sprint car race sees wrecks like this almost every weekend. Really hard to place blame on anybody for that wreck, the original post said something about Tony wiping out the whole field, cars 20 feet in the air, yeah right. Might make a highlight reel because it is Tony, but any other driver would have shot the gap when the front car didn't go.

It would have been pointless to go through the myriad of posts taking out random words here and there. And deleting the entire post would have put huge, nonsensical potholes in the discussion.

Alysha Ruggles, the 19-year-old who suffered a compression fracture in her back during a sprint-car race Tuesday in a race with Tony Stewart, is home from the hospital

Ruggles, whose mother took her to the hospital after she began complaining of back pain following the accident, suffered a compression fracture in her back, according to the (Rochester) Democrat and Chronicle.

"Right now, she has to take it one day at a time," Wendy Ruggles told the newspaper. "We had a big scare; she was close to being paralyzed."

I pulled the only real comments about the incident from the thread that was taken out, and merged into this one. There weren't many, because it degenerated into hog-calling and BS after about 4 posts.

She was treated at the track..and went later to the hospital..sorry I can't see all the hysteria, the big scare, close to being paralyzed? they got a gauge for that or something?, the cars twenty feet in the air and the headlines saying that " Tony Caused Massive Crash" The girls father kept racing and finished the race? ..sorry, drove a bus too long I guess, I have had people get on the bus after a minor wreck claiming neck and back problems and they weren't even on the bus.:)

TexasRaceLady: I notice one of my posts from the prior thread is now gone. i don't remember calling anyone any names, but if i did, i apologize.

A racer is a racer, that much is a given. I dont put any blame on Tony for wanting to race anywhere and anyway he can but in retrospect you have to wonder why this guys take this risk in the middle of a season. Injuries happen in a blink of an eye or worse.

I think that NASCAR should implement a rule that doesn't allow a driver whose currently running a full season on their premier league run anywhere else, or at least outside of the NASCAR circuit. Sort of like what the NBA has in their sport. It minimises the risks a player can take.

This isn't a franchise, like stick and ball thank goodness. individual team owners can write a contract excluding that and from what I hear, that was a big reason Smoke left Gibbs along with the switch to Toyota. My opinion is that a driver should be able to drive what he wants when he wants.

I missed yours. I've put it in. Sorry about that.

no need to apologize to me. I just wanted to make sure I hadn't overstepped the boundaries here. I never said I hadn't stooped to name calling before. but I really like this place and how you run it so I try to play within the rules. if I do get out of line, I fully expect to pay the penalty.

back to the discussion since I've now seen the video.....

tony taking a brazen chance amongst amateur racers. the exact same move that I would applaud him for in Winston cup, I despise him for when he tears up stuff of racers at a weekly short track.

jmo.

Winston cup???

How I wish.:)

StandOnit, a compression fracture of the vertebra can be very serious. Ask Denny Hamlin about the pain.

Amen to that, Having just recently had back surgery, I had no idea the amount of pain before hand and the time it takes to mend nerve damage that was done.

Back injuries are the worst IMO, they always come back to haunt you later in life, and I'm speaking from experience when I say it is some of the most intense pain you can imagine. Looked to me like Tony forced the issue a little, but then again it looked like a racing deal type thing. I'm sure Tony made some kind of reparations to these racers, that is the kind of guy he is. BTW he is racing at Lebanon Valley in WoO car Sunday night, wanted to go , but my summer bowling league playoffs same night......decisions, decisions.....lol.:(
