Snookerd!

...will be the headlines in your Monday morning news paper after Mark Martin wins the Protection One 400.
As many times as Mark has been snookerd out of a championship I think Mark has taken notice on how to out smart the competition.Let's think about it for a minute....

Okay this morning in first practice Mark seemed to struggle and only ended up 36th in practice times. Then what do you know..Mark goes over 2 mph. faster than what he had practiced.Other competitors are even struggling to get even 3 tenths of what they practiced.
Now that you know what happened lets take a peek under the microscope.

Okay I am dumb and I taped qualifying and if you watch the begining of it when Dale Jr. was being interviewed before quals started Mark was walking to his car laughing and smiling. If you are a fan of Marks you know Mark does not usually smile when he does poorly.Thats not the case this time....
Now we look even deeper into the story Mark does his pre qualifying interview and says how bad he was in practice this morning but then he later says how good they will be tomorrow. Then he lets these words slip at the end of the interview..."We did good for race setup"So maybe the 6 car didnt even run qualifying setup all day and when it was time to qualify they just stole the setup from one of the Roush cars or they just put tape on it.
Mark then goes out to qualify and amazingly he picks up over 2 mph faster he quits after 1 lap.
They then interview Jeff Burton where he said the 6 car changed alote of things after practice.Mark then says on his interview they didnt hardly change a thing. And how suprised he was and how lucky he was...believe me a driver can not make up 2 mph without changing many things.

In my mind the 6 car has started the mind games against the rookie team of the 48.Think about it Mark is more experienced and defiantly knows more tricks of the trade right now over Jimmie Johnson and he will use that to his advantage like Earnhardt did to Martin in 90' when martin was only in his third full time year.
many of you will think I am looking at a story that is not there...think again...

BTW:There is one other thing that I did not point out that makes me think the 6 is playing possem and that is for me to know and for you to find out this Sunday.

I agree that Mark has been down this road many times against much stiffer competition and it not so good a car himself. Like I've said before also, it won't surprise me to see the kids start blocking for him. He is the patriarch of the drivers on that team and has the best chance of getting to the cup.

A well placed bump early in a race can mean a 151 point swing. It's get down get dirty time at the racetrack. Would not surprise me at all to see the tactics on any number of teams turn dirty.

But racing dirty makes for a fun race. Whether it's in the first ten laps or in the last ten. With all the top point guys at the top of the starting grid, I can't wait to see who makes the first bump and where it goes from there.

Bumps are good for short tracks not for the bigger tracks. I think it would be crazy though if on the first lap all of the championship leaders got caught up in a wreck. Then all of the 5-10 pt drivers could catch up. Just think, ten drivers with a chance to leave with the point lead.:p

True, but the more in the championship race the more exciting it can be. I honestly don't think we will see anything major happen at the start of the race on Sunday. As long as it is good racing, I don't care.

Me too. Three or four guys going for the championship is good enough for me.

Speaking as a long time Mark Martin fan who recently changed to another driver, I think Danjay is right on target. Think about it for a second, for the moment factor out Jeff Gordon and Dale Jarrett. There is not a single challenger Mark has to beat with any Winston Cup championships. He has been down this road more often than any of the other front runners combined.

David Pearson did it to perfection. Bill Elliott was a master at playing possum. Mark has been studying his history.

Well here's a twist.

Jack Sprague as a designated blocker in the Hendrick proxy car. HMS entered extra cars back during one of The Jeffs early championship runs. Last race of the year, extra Hendrick driver takes the green, pulls in to the pits before completion of even one lap clinching the championship for Gordon.

RCR did it in the truck series by hiring various drivers during a stretch run to ensure the championship.

Team racing in nascar? Not on yer life bucko:rolleyes:

No sure Mark was sandbagging, don't see where he would gain an advantage by doing so.

What I see is a veteran driver with a car not handling too well that stepped up, got up on the wheel and made one hell of a lap to get the starting postion the team needed.

Marks post qualifying quotes:

MARK MARTIN --6-- Viagra Taurus (Qualified 9th) --

WHERE DID THE SPEED COME FROM BECAUSE IN PRACTICE YOU WERE DOWN ON THE CHART? "Ignorance. I drove like a young, dumb rookie I think because there's no way I should have made it around. I know I couldn't do it again, but I'm real happy with that. We've got a new car here and the car really didn't ever work that good for us. I feel like when we get in race setup we'll be able to get a chance to kind of get it worked out. I think we'll be good for Sunday and, lucky for us, we're gonna get a decent starting spot too."

WAS THE PRACTICE CHART INDICATIVE OF HOW YOU WERE? "Oh yeah, that's all we had and we didn't make any significant changes either. We just got a lap. That's why I'm so happy. That's all about a real special lap I got there. The car was not good, but I feel like once we get a chance to get it out and run some laps in race trim, we'll figure out what it is that it really needs and get it in there. It's a great, great day for us."

What he would gain by bagging is misinformation. Face it, every team knows some of what every other team is doing. Mark goes out and practices alternative set ups to see what effect they have on the car. He puts the real deal in for qualifying. They now know what scuffs will do, what a 2 tire change will do, etc etc.

I wouldn't put it past him is all.

JJ is starting in the pos that jeff won with last year, and I bet Jeff has givin him some advice to this matter.

I will never forget the mind games DE and RC played with Mark and Roush during a test at Atlanta one year. RCR came down with one car, a couple of engines and not much else. Roush came down with many cars, many engines, and lots of crewmen. DE went out and cut a terribly fast lap --- then the whole team packed up and left. Leaving Roush and Mark wondering.

Sounds like the mind games have begun. Ought to be interesting.

You notice how Michael Schu in F1 doesnt practice much and goes out and woops everyone!

same deal I guess

Mark still got ripped off that year anyway YOU look at it!
