How do we keep the Johnson Dynasty from reaching #5?

I think that the points should be closed up in finishing order- Instead of a 190 point spread from 1st to 43rd, make it more like 140 points (with a 10 point bonus for winning).

1- (43*3) + 10
2- 42*3
3- 41*3
....
10- 33*3
...
43- 1*3

Then, take a point call at the halfway point, so there's a 43 point bonus for leading at halfway, down to 1 point for being last at halfway. So that, if you lead at halfway and win, that's 173 points.

1- 42
2- 42
3- 41
....
10- 33
...
43- 1

So that having a bad race won't hurt so much, having a stock pile of wins won't create such big holes in the points system, and if you get taken out in the last half of the race, at least you get at least some credit.

Take away the aligning by win count/bonus points, and line them up by having 25% of their origional deficit as their new deficit.

Johnson- 6652
Martin- 6511 (-141)
Gordon- 6475 (-177)
Busch- 6446 (-206)
....

would become

Johnson- 6652
Martin- 6617 (-35)
Gordon- 6608 (-44)
Busch- 6600 (-52)

and so on.

So, do you want a new point system because you really want a close race or chase to the cup, or do you just not want Johnson to win?

Either/or. If one happens, both have to happen. Obviously, Knaus has every square millimeter of every chase track noted down do a science. So if we can take his exorbidant points leads and cut them down to size, everybody else will have a better chance to keep him from not being champion.

For the same reason that 1/4 mile times are not compared to 1000ft. times, so should Chase Championships not be compared to pre-Chase Championships.

Just a belief of mine but the 10 race chase should feature atleast one type of every track, yet road courses which is Jimmie has his hardest time with is left out of the chase. Move one of the mile and a halfs and put the Glen in there then see what happends.

My favorite subject, Petty and Big E ARE NOT TIED with 7 Sprint Cup championships apiece. Everyone of their trophys reads Winston Cup.
I do know about the restriction of cigarette advertising in sports etc but they haven't made the city of Winston-Salem NC change their name now have they???

Same championship, different sponsor name. It's like the old Peach Bowl is now called the Chik-fil-a Bowl. Same game, different sponsor. Besides, several of Petty's didn't have Winston on them. Winston didn't become a series sponsor until 1972.

You can't keep changing the rules every time one team puts together the pieces necessary for success. One of the major complaints I hear nowadays is that there are too many rule changes already.

Agreed. Stick with what we have now. If you keep changing the way the system works, you'll never give teams a chance to adapt, and produce the level of success needed to win a Championship.

Why not make it a real chase. In all other sports in the playoffs teams are illuminated if they loose. Nascar needs to figure out a way to illuminate cars out of the field. Why does there have to be 43 cars in every race in the 1st place? I think things would be more interesting if the last 25 or so races would field say 30 cars then illuminate down to 10 cars for the final race of the season. Then race for the whole kit-n-kabootal as Fox loves to say "shot out style", who ever wins the last race wins the championship. Bet nascar could sell tickets for that. NASCAR and college football both need a playoff system badly.

the way I see it, NASCAR put this chase thing in there to keep things like Matt Kenseth's 2003 title where he only won 1 race & Dale Earnhardts 87 title where he won by about 400pts from happening again. this chase format was supposed to make better racing & competition in the late races of the year where the leader pads his season long pts lead & rides off into the sunset, losing viewership because folks already know who's going to win the title. well then, whats the difference with this chase format, Johnson & team have this deal figured out like no one else & appear to able to win the next 1, 2, or even three more titles. whats NASCAR gonna do then. Honestly, what will NASCAR do if Johnson wins a 5th str8 next season, start him off in 2011 with -1000pts at Daytona. No they will do nothing. they can go ahead & stick the Glen in there, Johnson & knaus will adapt, they will figure it out & get it done. there's nothing they can do to stop him. it would have been more competitive to just maintain the old system with more points going to race winners. as far as Jimmy I say congrats, i was one of those who back in 05 said that if Jimmy & team ever got his on track issues str8'nd out that he'd win about 4 or 5 titles & he has done that so I am not surprised at all...

I agree. Like it or not, Johnson and his Crew Chief are a dynamic duo when it comes to racing. They shouldn't hold Johnson back because he's doing so well, the other drivers should be doing better.

I have always been a proponent of awarding points as by position for each lap. It could be done with computerized scoring. That would put the emphasis back on qualifying and the drivers would have to run closer to the front to get the most points they can.

What he said. Why penalize a team for figuring out how to do it and winning?

Just because one team put forth a lot of hard work and effort to win the championship doesn't mean we should make it easier for the others to catch up. The others need to get to work and try harder. Kind of like what’s wrong with this country now. People always want to make it easier for the lazy dirt bags to catch up for putting forth half the effort.

Other sports leagues will tweak the rules when one team dominates for a long period of time. The Chase was created to add some excitement and drama to who will win the championship. But it hasn't worked out that way the last couple of years. So if it was created to add excitement and drama and isn't doing so, then something has to be done to fix that.

Which sport has done that?
