So What Happened To Wawd (Ward to you Yankees) Burton

He's taken the biggest drop off the radar of any competitive driver that I can think of in recent times.. :(

I respect these veterans who go out each week, usually in uncompetitive cars, and try to help a small team get established.

Saw him at Berlin Raceway a few weeks ago. His son Jeb was running the ARCA race there that day.

Wad Button was one of my favorites. A man who will name his son Jeb Stuart is telling Corporate folks where to go.

I saw Wad get his first Busch GN win at Rockingham in the "Gwaltney"27 car. (I believe it was his first BGN win)
He is the only driver that ever made Bill Davis cup cars look decent. I would have loved to have seen him in an RCR car. On the tough technical ovals Wad was strong, winning at Rockingham and Darlington.

Jeff and Wad's personality differences seemed to be as big the accents. Wad didn't sugar coat things, I suppose his refusal to kiss corporate butt is what put him out. He was a breath and fresh air, and is missed imo.

I always waited for him to get back into a ride after he got screwed out of his. I cant remember what happened exactly but i thought it was a handshake deal that wasn't honored by the other guy.

I also was at that race, impressed me a lot as he beat the likes of Dale, Darrell and Davey Allison to name a few stars in that race.

I liked Ward also, he was a southern boy with a way southern drawl. Not the corporate polished personality of drivers today. Wished he still competed, but I understand he had his days and would now help his son and his foundation.

I thought this was a bit funny from his website:

"As a result of these activities, Ward is a sought-after SPEAKER, consultant and spokesperson on global environmental policy issues and business building opportunities."

Ward's son races at Ace Speedway. He ran the South Boston opener earlier this year, but right now, if you're name isn't Philip Morris, you won't do a whole lot of winning at South Boston.

I think Jeb won at Ace a while ago actually... tough track to, those races come down to photo-finishes and the use of a chrome horn.

If Ward had been in top-quality cars with top-quality crewmen back when he was driving I believe he would have been consistently competitive.

Jeff always said it was because Ward grew up on the South side of the house. LOL
