SoCal San Diego '26

I had to do a double take when I saw the headline.

I'm speechless. And i'm not 100% sure for which reason.

The Navy gets a stock car weekend for its 250th anniversary. Probably going to be great ticket deals through MWR for the sailors.

For its 250th, the Army got stuck marching in a parade. :p
Too bad we don't get Trump vs Elon for the UFC undercard.

The more I think about this, the more I like it. Have one weekend a year at a military installation, and rotate through the branches of service. Plenty of bases and forts have sufficient space, especially the aviation installations. Many are located near metropolitan areas, bringing the sport to more new audiences. It looks good for NASCAR to be acknowledging military personnel. It gives the service branch a big recruiting opportunity, including one-off sponsorships. Anthems would probably be done by service members and bands, so you know they won't be oversung or artistically interpreted. The facility is likely to be more flexible than a city about a rain delay and wanting to leave the course in place an extra day. Since NASCAR wouldn't have to work around commuter and tourist traffic, set-up should take less time.

The Marines can have one at Twentynine Palms. Start the race with a twenty one Howitzer salute. (preferably 155 mm)And the race can end if a sand storm kicks up.

Kennedy, NASCAR’s chief venue officer, doesn’t have the course finalized yet. He’s having drivers work through a variety of elements on iRacing, the racing game simulator that has helped NASCAR work on designs for street courses and other track reconfigurations.
You have the tarmac, which is as wide as you want to make it," Kennedy said while standing near the top of the base’s control tower. "And then a lot of the roads and streets that we drove in this morning, they're five or six lanes wide. So this is going to create for some really good passing zones."

Lot more elbow room than a course on actual city streets. Hopefully fewer yellows than Chicago.
