Youtube is great. Just about anything can be found there including some NASCAR racing to watch during the off season. Personally I find it more entertaining to watch these old races rather than simply looking up the finish.

I don't think that I'm going out on a limb here to say that many on this forum probably never had a chance to watch a race at 'The Rock'. Here's one that I've been watching from 1989. This was race #27 of a then 29 race season. It was a week after some controversy surrounding the finish of the finish @ North Wilkesboro. Rusty Wallace held a slim 37 point lead heading into this race. This video starts off with a great recap of the previous weeks events setting the stage for a great matchup @ Rockingham.

I like seeing how many things have changed while many other things remain the same as today. I liked the racing coverage way better on ESPN back then. No ticker! A nice full screen view of the race. BP! Miss that guy. Great in-car views, etc. Classic paint schemes. A young Mark Martin? Yeah, there was one of those once.

Thanks dpk. I'll save this one for when I can't find a local race. ;)

I really enjoy the smart TV when it comes to watching net shows.

Been watching a lot of European rally racing. Better than nothing

Thanks for the heads up D.P. I wanted to pick a good one and this sounds like one. I was trying to find the Craven/ Busch race, all I can find is the last part. I'm watching motocross trucks...I hear ya, beats nothing.

I've been watching the old Busch Clash' races and the Gatorade 125's here lately. Some good racing in those. I'll check that rock race out.

I keep a file of older NASCAR races which I have DVR'd over the years to watch during times like this. They are usually old enough so that I don't remember who won so it's just like watching them for the first time. Also, in a slightly off topic bit of trivia, I found an old re-run of the 1973 Indy 500 (don't even remember where I found it). During the race, they introduced a new pit reporter..young guy named Dave Letterman! Yep, THAT Dave Letterman.

I knew that he had grown up in Indiana, had been a weatherman on a local TV show there at one time and has also long been involved in the Indy 500 as a car owner. I never knew that he had been a pit reporter there though.

Here's a link to the beginning of that race. The person that posted that race divided it up into 25 videos. I'm guessing that there were 25 commercial breaks or something to that effect. I checked and found all 25 parts to the race so the full race is there to view if you're still interested.

I've been catching up on old races I misssed for years now on Youtube. It's a great resource to see what really happened in a particular race your not unsure about or just didn't get to see...

dp, thanks for posting that I watched the whole race, wow there was alot of things different.

1) they were really hesitant to throw the caution flags back then, why well honestly the racing back in the pack was too good to throw a caution!!! nascar has focused too much on what the leader is doing. The race was awesome you saw comers and goers, the tires would wear some cars were substantially faster at certain points, this lead to ALOT of passing particularly back in the pack. a fast car could move right on up through the pack. yeah the race did get strung out at times with only a few cars on the lead lap but I didn't find myself disappointed in that racing one bit.
2) look how different pit stops were they loosened up all the lugs on the left while the right side was jacked up
3) pit boxes were loosely defined tires could be left where ever you could pit with the car over the middle of the next box,
4) richard childress actually works on the car!!!
5) crew chiefs actually went over the wall!!
6) earnhardts car had what looked like a right side exterior mirror, never seen that before
7) jack pennington running a year prior car, monte carlo which was a totally different body than the luminas, that big of body difference would never fly now days
8) NASCAR QUIT REPAVING TRACKS!!!!! did you notice the dips and bumps there wholly crap!!! drivers now days would be whining their heads off. The suspension on the cars really got a work out, which if they raced on a track like that would force the teams to get the cars off the ground. WHY did they repave michigan there was nothing wrong with it. I say patch these race tracks give the tracks some character old asphalt has always meant better racing.
9) freaking check out HARRY GANT!!! what a freaking cool incar camera that guy makes. no gloves on big freaking ring on his right hand, no left foot braking, skoal bandit, and best of all is he probably had the race won if not for getting taken out. its too bad we don't have a harry gant racing anymore what a cool dude.
10) whatever happened to barry dodson?? championship winning CC
11) check out the flimsy crappy pit wall that seperates the cars from pit road, dangerous comes to mind.
12)ever notice how back in the day the engines sound different?? the cars really sound totally different, I know back then the exhaust was driver side exit but I don't think that is what makes the sound so different.
13) imagine a race where some teams have more tires than others
14) look how young jack roush looks
15) lastly mark martins first win!!
16) one last thing I forgot I actually liked the in car camera shots BETTER back then they seemed to show the track through the windshield better rather than just the driver of the inside of the car. I also like how they could turn them and see out the back of the car, someone needs to watch these races those were better in car camera shots IMO

Here's a pretty good 3-part show on NASCAR's history. Something to pass the time for those of us waiting on February to come.

17) No catch fence

Recently I've watched a couple of the Bristol night races from the mid 90's. Damn was the racing awesome back then

Good read here guys,

I've been to the rock several times. Can't remember the years but Kyle petty dominated one of those.
Looking at all the older photos I was at many of those events with my father as a young child.
Thanks for a thread worth my time during the off season:bounce:

DP keep posting this stuff, throw back thursday would be great. loved the race with mark martins first win. keep it coming.

I've been watching rain drops race each other to the bottom of the window pain for the past few hours. Best thing I've seen since California. :D
