There were no spotters then just as there was no absolute rush to service the cars during pit stops.
Spotters are recent, but it is interesting to note the absence of deep or padded steering wheels, safety fuel tanks, shoulder harness, high back or wrap around seat. Special note to the original manufacturer bumpers, k/a the chrome horn, and the list goes on.

The racing was a lot different then and doubtful, were it the same today as then, the fan base would remain small. It was not uncommon for the winner to be several laps in front of the second place car, but still there was total excitement.
