In the early 1970’s Danny “Chocolate” Myers, the son of driver Bobby Myers who was fatally injured at Darlington in 1957, showed up with a buddy who had a junky car trying to make one of the companion races to the Daytona 500. They didn’t have a spare dollar between them.

Bill France, Sr. brought over a Ford factory rep and introduced him to Myers and his buddy telling Chocolate that the man had been a friend of his dad’s. After Myers shook the man’s hand he looked in his hand and found $200.

Myers and hi pal didn’t win the race at Daytona, but they were now able to make it to the next race.

Who was the buddy with Myers that day? Some aspiring competitor named Richard Childress. Maybe you’ve heard of him.
