BEECH BLUFF, Tenn. — A Henderson County woman charged with the murder of her 13-year-old son Thursday was depressed from the recent death of her grandmother, according to statements family members made to the Henderson County Sheriff's Department.
Sheriff Brian Duke said the father of the slain boy requested that his son's name not be released to the public. He said authorities have charged Patricia Michelle Winbush, 33, with first-degree murder.
Deputies served Winbush with a warrant Thursday afternoon at Henderson County Community Hospital, where she was being treated for injuries she sustained in what deputies believe was a suicide attempt, Duke said.
Winbush remained in the hospital Thursday night. Duke said deputies found her "in bad condition" and her son dead when they went to check on them Wednesday night at the request of family members.
Duke said family members had been trying to reach Winbush all day Wednesday at her trailer home.
He said Winbush lived in the trailer with her son and her grandmother. Duke said the grandmother died last week.
He said family members think Winbush was so despondent over the death of her grandmother that she killed her son and tried to commit suicide.
Duke said investigators think the 13-year-old boy was killed sometime Wednesday. The home is located in the west end of Henderson County near the Madison County line.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation of the boy's death, Duke said.
"We received a call around 7:30 p.m. (Wednesday) to do a welfare check on a person whose family members could not get in contact with," Duke said. "When deputies arrived on the scene, they found the body of one family member and another family member in very bad shape."
The boy's body was sent to Nashville for autopsy, Duke said.
While the official cause of death isn't known, Duke said the boy wasn't shot or stabbed.
