I had a financial meltdown this past month and I needed to get everything off of my old servers, they were costing me $198/mo and I could not afford another charge attempt (costs me another $66 in bank fees just to have an item overdraft and then get returned).

A friend of mine and I now co-own a new server (which was built back in October) that is being hosted at $135/mo, and for the time being, he's paying the bill. I have already paid him $500 of the $2,350 it cost him, and we're planning on running a sorta webhosting business on it. If we find a cheaper/better place to host it at, we can just simply move the hardware itself instead of moving all of the files & databases like I had to do here.

The changeover has had a couple of hiccups that I will try and solve as soon as I can.

Merry Christmas and all that! :beerbang:

Thanks for all the hard work in getting this back up, Fury, and Merry Christmas to ya.

Most active members would have helped out on the financial side, if only a buck a month!

Thanks furry

What a cute pet name. Y'all must be close... :D

I don't want to seem like a beggar or anything, that's why I almost never post about the financial stuff. This little botch-up seemed like it needed some explanation, though. I got everything moved to the server in time, just wasn't very pretty for a while until I could get around to each site and import the database & set the files up in the right places.

The new server is actually owned, rather than leased, so it's a step up that cost us a pretty penny (us being myself and a friend; we have been co-hosting our online games for a couple years or so and decided we needed something substantial to host things on) but in the long run will be cheaper, and more flexible.

wheres the server? Surely you're not running it off the fiber optics at home? lol

Boston, MA. Nope, don't have fiber optics at home yet. :D

I know the feeling sometimes. My upload isn't what I'd call adequate. It's pretty much bare minimum, I think, to handle the overhead from sending all the acknowledge packets for downloading at 800kb/s, cause when I'm uploading anything, trying to download something then reminds me of my days on dialup.

thats nothing. HN has a FAP policy that a user can only download 200 MB of information in a rolling 24 hour period. IF you exceed the 200 MB limit, they cut you to 25 KB/s download and 10 KB/s upload speeds for 24 hours.

Ouch. Your upload is smaller than 56k dialup. I hope for god's sake you're at least not paying them any more than you would for dialup!

Mine's $45/mo, started out as $36/mo for 12 months...

59/month.

That was just low for then, i retested and it was back at 128.

Charles County won't allow fiber optics here. They keep blocking it, every year since 2001.

We'll probably never get FIOS.

DemocRATs suck.

fury, you don't know how much we appreciate your hard work and dedication to keeping us, and others, up and running.

I'll have some shekels in the mail to you today.

(((HUGS)))

I think I read somewhere that a company based in Connecticut was blocking FiOS in Charles County. When asked to respond a spokesperson said that there was 1 guy in Waldorf that was giving them some major diss on the web and this was there only way to strike back...
