SPEED Channel will air a 30-minute special report beginning at 7:30pm/et tonight [October 25th] on the Hendrick Motorsports plane tragedy. Ralph Sheheen will host the program from the SPEED studios in Charlotte, NC.
Inside Nextel Cup will air a half hour program tonight from 7:00-7:30pm/et, the hot seat guest was supposed to be Bobby Labonte, but he will hopefully be rescheduled, tonight the show covers Nextel Cup Martinsville Highlights and a quick preview of Atlanta. The drivers talked about the Hendrick tragedy in the first segment. Michael Waltrip will not be on the showbecause of a prior commitment, and Kenny Wallace fills in for him.
Hendrick Motorsports driver Jeff Gordon, originally scheduled to be Dave Despain's in-studio guest tonight on Wind Tunnel, will not be on the show for obvious reasons. NASCAR Busch Series points leader Martin Truex Jr. has agreed to take Gordon's spot on tonight's show.(SC PR

The vultures are circling, and the bodies aren't even cold yet.
You have a valid point, Professur. The vultures being the media jumping in with "specials".

I just hope that they are better done than the cobbled-together chit that FSN did after DE was killed.

I don't see a "30 minute special report" as vultures circling. Thirty minutes on Speed on Monday night is hardly going to generate a lot of extra revenue for them. Now, if it was a two hour retrospective, I would be more inclined to agree.
Would you prefer Speed to do nothing. Just go on like nothing happend and let CNN butcher it for a minute and half?

See what exactly they do before condemning them.

I don't see it as being a negative if it is done in good taste (which I'm sure it will be). It is probably meant as a tribute and done out of respect. Nascar fans are a loyal and compassionate bunch and everyone is still reeling. I know I'm still shocked. I don't think they would put out anything distasteful while everyone is still so emotional. I really doubt that anyone in Nascar, drivers, media or otherwise would take part if it wasn't done right. Imagine what everyone would say if nothing at all was done. It would be, Geez, they don't even care enough to recognize the Hendrick family, Nascar is all about the money and doesn't care about anything else.

Point well made, Steve.

I'll watch, and then decide.

People are wanting info and it is a responsibility of Speed to give it to them . I have no problem with the special and thought that it was done OK. What tore me up was seeing Kenny Schrader on inside Nascar preceding the special. Kenny was very emotional and all choked up. It took everything he had to not start crying. The depth of this tragedy is enormous.

Very well done last night by Speed.

Inside Nextel Cup was so sad last night. Kenny Schrader was so close to losing it, he had me in tears for him.

We tend to forget how close those guys in the garage are.

i dont see it that way either.

its speed channel, and this is some of the biggest news in the sport currently.

if it was your local news that was doing this, then is would consider it "vultures circling"

I was doing the same, TRL. Ken Schrader had me in tears while he was trying desperately to keep his from flowing. And, I thought that Speed did a very nice job on their show.

MCanyon, my only fear --- before I saw the special --- was that it would be the thrown-together in a hurry stuff that popped up all over TV after DE was killed. That was truly "vultures" circling.

As I said above, I watched last night, and it was well-done. Perhaps everyone learned the lesson after the harsh criticism following those DE "specials."

My local news is nothing but vultures. To the point that I usually watch a Manitoba news broadcast.

That said, the memorial was much, much better than anything I'd predicted. Kudos to Speed.

INNC & the special were excellent done.
As stated by others, Kenny had tears running down my face. And I thought Ralph did a great job on the special. Dave Despain had to mention the tragedy because it is the biggest news in our sport, but I applaud him for not dwelling on it and getting on with his show.
I think SPEED Channel has shown a great deal of class dealing with this tragedy.

That was really hard to watch and not have any tears.
