In a press release, SPEED president Hunter Nickell detailed that SPEED is not developing original NASCAR-themed programs for prime time, but more celebrity-driven lifestyle and enthusiast shows. The lone NASCAR entry is once again a highlights program.

"SPEED has a history of success with original enthusiast programming," said Nickell. "We are aggressively communicating with the production community, teaming with some of the biggest names in the category as we develop the 2011 weekday prime time lineup."

Car Warriors (Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET, 60 minutes) – This hyper-charged automotive build show will pit a team of eight "all-star" builders against a team of average Joe's from local garages in a 72-hour challenge to turn a basic car into a work of art. Judges include iconic car designer George Barris, hot rod craftsman Jimmy Shine and electronics wizard Mad Mike Martin.

American Trucker (Thursdays at 10 and 10:30 p.m. ET, two 30-minute episodes) – Hosted by designer/artist and fanatical truck expert Rob Mariani, a finalist on HGTV's Design Star, this new show introduces the audience to iconic trucks, the famous routes they followed and the cargo missions that made history.

Car Science (Wednesdays at 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. ET, two 30-minute episodes) – The producers of the popular franchise series Sports Science and Fight Science bring a mad-cap scientific approach to the world of automobiles.

Speed Makers (Thursday at 9 p.m. ET, 60 minutes) – Speed Makers takes a look at the iconic builders and epic innovators of acceleration. From celebrated mega-structures like Daytona International Speedway to behind the scenes at Aston Martin, this show celebrates the masterminds of engineering power.

Ticket to Ride with Dan Neil (Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. ET) – Pulitzer Prize-winning Wall Street Journal automotive writer Dan Neil takes viewers inside the business of cars, offering insightful test drives, interviews and commentary with a trademark wit that has made Neil a must-read for car lovers. Adam Carolla and others are along for the ride.

The 10 (Wednesday at 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. ET, two 30-minute episodes) – A fast-paced list program, highlighting the best of the best from the world of NASCAR. First season topics include Most Bizarre Finishes, Throw-downs, Talladega Moments, All-Time Races, Closest Calls and Earnhardt Moments.

I think we found Mayfield's dealer.

those shows don't sound that bad actually, better then when they did 3 hours of NASCAR related shows each night which were cancelled one by one.

It'd be nice to watch the re-runs of last years races with a narratar picking them apart for better or for worse, minus listening to the 3 yes-men up in the booth.

It was over saturation with all the Nascar shows, I'd like to see them do more coverage of the other types of racing series. Some of their original shows are OK, like Pass Time, Pinks is take it or leave it, but some of the other shows suck big time.

Does anyone even watch The Speed Channel?

I watch it when they have the World of Outlaws or Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series on there. I'd be willing to watch it more if they showed some ARCA races, sprints and midgets (like ESPN's old Thursday Night Thunder), and some other forms of racing. These "reality" shows don't cut it for me.

Maybe they coulkd take the budget allotted for this crap reality stuff and put it towards actually live racing like the weekly sprint and midget series, or my new addiction the Aussie V-8 SuperCars. Ford versus Chevy (OK Holden).

I guess they feel the ratings are higher for the reality shows.

I miss that show that use to be on called SETUP with the guys running pontiac solstices. yeah it was road racing but it was still a pretty cool show.

I was thinking this same idea, now to get it to speed. I also want to see more road racing or some of those wild off road rallies.

i read somewhere that it's cheaper to put on reality shows than other original programs. i'm sure (at least i hope) that a cost/benefit analysis was done in regards to ratings/cost of production and profits were greater with reality shows.

IDK about the ratings but I did read it costs almost nothing to make a "reality" show. With the way networks are cutting costs I expect to see more reality shows than scripted shows in the coming years.

I believe you are right. Two years ago, the History Channel did a series called Madhouse about the modified racing in Winston Salem. It appeared to be widely loved, and many people wanted to see it return. However that didn't happen, but there will now be a series about dirt drivers called Dirt Knights. This one will be on Versus. Here's where you can see the promo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DV_muv_UqA

Now that Versus has been purchased by ComCast from NBC, maybe they'll get some more recognition. Although, I personally think that NBC programing isn't all that great, either. In fact, I can't think of a single show on NBC which I care to watch. But, maybe ComCast'll help Versus?

If the NFL can have it's own network, why can't NASCAR?

That is a great question. I would be willing to bet the France family has asked that very question at least a hundred times......

And the next question the France family asked was "and how can we funnel the money into our account".

:D

Well, SPEED no longer has to worry about that pesky ALMS racing keeping them from airing more reality shows.

ESPN is the new home for American Le Mans Series, live on ESPN3, live and SDD on ESPN2 and ABC.
