Tne modifieds are not as big as the big top 3 classes, but still huge. They also have a long history.
Evans was most worthy for the Hall, and when Jack Ingram goes in he will be worthy as well. I just wish more of their types would also be recognized.
In their day there wasn't as big as a gap from Modified, Late Model Sportsman (the term LMS still feels so familiar) to the then Grand National or Cup series.
There was more regional heroes. The Saturday night big 200, 250, or 300 lappers were more common, and they attracted the big dogs.
Evans and Ingram didn't mop up against flunkies, those races were tough with plenty of competition.
I admire Bobby Allison he was a racers racer, and I remember how he would fly over headed to the airport, when he flew into run in some of those 200 lappers. But more often then not Jack Ingram beat him as well as Dale when he showed up.
Guys like Morgan Shepherd (pre cup rides) and Butch Lindlley and also would run against the cup guys at some tracks like Martinsville. They ran up front Butch led half of the laps in one race.
There was a lot of talent that could do almost as well money wise running LMS, so they stayed there.
I wish I had seen R. Evans run the mods, but I do know he was dominant, and he could have been great in the cup cars.
As many people as he inspired....that makes him righteous HOF.
It may not be a popular pick, but one day Geoff Bodine will deserve a spot for his modified and cup accomplishments.
Having a guy like Evans in, and future entries like Ingram, Farmer, Ard, Lund, even Lenny Bohler [sp] is something that any grassroots fan should celebrate.
In the 60's, 70s, 80's they rolled in to our local tracks, and they gave millions of great racing moments. There was nothing phony, gimmick or 2nd class about them, they were the best short trackers in the word.
Grand National or Cup included, and the races they ran were 2nd to none.
