BRISTOL, Tenn. – Every NASCAR fan has an opinion, and the folks at Bristol Motor Speedway hear a lot of them.
"Race fans, in particular, a lot of times you don’t have to ask for it," speedway spokesman Kevin Triplett said.
With the formation of a Fan Advisory Board this year, the speedway will actively solicit even more opinions. Officials are taking applications for 25 spots on a board made up of fans who will help advise the speedway on its customer service and fan friendliness, Triplett said.
This won’t change the speedway’s policy of responding to every single comment received from fans, Triplett said. Instead, it will create another avenue for fans to share their thoughts about the world’s fastest half-mile.
It’ll also be a chance for speedway officials to bounce ideas off fans before putting them into action, Triplett said.
"What our fans think truly matters to us," said speedway President Jeff Byrd. "Our No. 1 priority has always been to provide the best experience possible for our fans. In fact, some of our most notable improvements here, like the infield video/scoring tower, have come as a result of fan suggestions."
The concept has been tried by the Memphis Grizzlies basketball team, Triplett said. As far as he knows, however, Bristol will be the only track in NASCAR with this type of board.
The hope is to find a wide cross-section of the fans who come to Bristol, Triplett said. The speedway is taking applications until Feb. 9.
Triplett said no one is sure what the response will be.
"We have no idea," he said. "We don’t know if we’ll get 100 or 10,000. We’re prepared for either, but we just don’t know."
