Spencer to the 7?

Silly Season in its more normal time of year.

According to Lee Spencer of the Sporting News Jim Smith wants to get Jimmy in the UltraMotorSports Dodge for next season. Smith says he wants the experience.

"We need to get this car in the top 20 next season," Smith says. "We need stability. Spencer has a lot to prove, and so do we."

The story also says that Smith plans to meet with crew chief Tony Furr to determine whether Furr will return in 2003. If he doesn't the article says Tommy Baldwin is first in line for the job.

If I were Baldwin and Spencer I would think twice about signing with a team who's owner just "needs to get the car in the top 20 next season". Pretty Lame goal in my opinion.

If your gonna race....Race2Win

Even if Baldwin and Spencer go to the #7 I doubt they will make it into the top 20. That team isn't that good to do it on a consistent basis.

id like to see Baldwin get on with a good team........if this hurts anyone's career, its going to kill Baldwin's

Kinda funny about the Target racing commercial coming out about the same time Jimmy gets Sh!tcanned.

I don't think he is to high on the marketable driver list.

Tommy Baldwin to the 7 would be a big mistake. I don't think they will be around for the long haul. Jim Smith is having some legal problems and I'm not to sure how secure the sponsorship is. Tommy would be better off at a more stable organization. Crew chief for Elliot Sadler maybe?

Tommy was considered at one time to be a hot prospect for the RYR-Sadler car. That seems to have cooled off somewhat.

The names being mentioned with Yates and the M&M car are now Jim Elledge, Brad Parrott, Slugger Labbe, and Ryan Pemberton. The validity of any of these is unsure.

There is also some speculation that Ray Fox might just keep the job.

Well, I would like to see Spencer get a good ride for next year. For some reason , and I don't know why, I like jimmy. I wish he could take Busch's ride from him. Kurt is the only driver that I just can not tolerate. I wish he would go back to doing whatever he was doing before he came to winston cup...:p

Trying to imagine Spencer in the #7... this isn't working for me, anybody else having better luck? lol.

Give Spencer a decent car and it doesn't matter what number you put on it.......he'll make if perform or wreck trying!!:D His nickname, Mr. Excitement, is worn well by him!!:)

Don't know much about the 7 team except Casey didn't do real well in it (plus others). I'm not convinced that it was equipment problems though. Casey moved up a little too soon in my opinion so it could have been mostly driver problems. If Spencer gets in the car and it still has the same problems then we can say it's probably equipment and Casey got shafted. I'm not worried about Jimmy or Tommy's career should they decide to move the team.......they are big boys and can take care of themselves.:)

Run Jimmy, that 7 car is going to be even worse without the help from Evernham.

When Baldwin was with Ward he did pretty good..........I think he is a great crew chief.............but he needs to get a better ride than the 7!!!

Hate to say it but smiths legal problems are probably pretty severe. The EPA don't mess around with things like illegal dumping. from what I have heard in the past few years nobody bothers to even do chrome plating in california anymore because the regulations are so tight. could he be trying to attract sponser money with a name to get himself out of trouble and then go belly up. or take the money and run.

Uhhh....Chip Ganassi Racing is good equipment.

Ganassi is good equipment and Spencer couldn't do anything with it. It might be best for him to go full-time in his Busch car. I know he doesn't want to, but that might help him out a bit.

Yeah Ganassi is good equipment...........on one car, not both!!:)

Sort of like Hendrick......RCR for Dale......even Roush (but on two cars). Only so much money team owners are willing to lay out during a season. I'm not saying it's wrong, just that the 41 and 40 cars were not equal. Niether is the 5 and 24. Give Jimmy a car with the support of the 40 or 24 or 97 or 6 or 20.........and then we'll see if he can perform.:)

I think they should have kept Spencer in the #41 for the 2nd year of his contract, but that's why I'm a fan and Ganassi is an owner.

even so so ganassi equipment has to be better than what that 7 team has to offer.
WOW What a bummer that the team Alan Kulwicki worked so hard to build has come to this.

I don't think I ever said that the 7 car was a well equiped car.......think I distinctly said I didn't know anything about it except that Casey didn't go very good. But, I did qualify that by saying that I think Casey moved up too quickly.......I said that last year too. All I said was that give Jimmy a decent car and I think he will do decently.........no matter what number is on the car!:) So say what you want about Jimmy and the 7 car.....if he takes the ride, he is a big boy and he can make it work or jump ship and go somewhere else.

Guess I was defending Jimmy from some of the usual crappy driver stuff that always seems to come up. He's a pretty darned good driver without a ride.......and I wish him luck. No matter what car he winds up in. And I don't think he should go back to Busch either......only as a last resort to put food on his table for his family. He wants a Cup ride, he's been in Cup for a while, and he's good enough to be in Cup. :)

What's with this talk that Ganassi is giving Spencer so-so equipment? Other than Jimmy's position in the point standings, where is the evidence?

I'm not buying it. I believe Chip gives both of his teams great stuff, and it is up to the teams to figure out how to get it to run at the front.
