Sprint and Nextel Merger Talks.

The agreement is to have Sprint be the majority owner. What happens with the Nextel Cup? I am sure NEXTEL will have a clause that says Sprint is required to fullfill it contractual agreement. Sprint already bailed on NASCAR once. Lets hope they do not try and do it again if this goes through.

I have read in the Washington Post that there are some people in Nextel that are nervous over the proposed merger. Sprint management may possibly have more influence on how the combined companies are run than Nextel would like. This merger has the risk of being another MCI / WorldCom type merger, however, on the other hand it could be a big winner for both.

How the merger would effect the relationship with Nascar is anyone's guess at this point. The overall profit margin would be significantly reduced with a merger.

yeah, but it might make nextel suck less? I know people around here that work for nextel and they say that they wouldn't use the service unless it was free for them...cingular used to suck coverage wise around here until the merger, now everyone seems to be pretty happy with it. Sprint is excellent around these parts and a merger might make it even better in some places.

My question is what will this do to the sponsorship name... will we have the Sprint Cup Series? Having a series sponsor with the same as a type of race car could get confusing.

Nextel is basically for "business" and Sprint for consumers like you and I.

I live in Overland Park Kansas which is world headquarters for Sprint. I feel the same way about Sprint as the people you know about NEXTEL.

do you think a merger with nextel would help it out? I mean, better coverage and whatnot? I know that at least around here, it would help out nextel, it also really helped cingular when they merged with AT%T.

I live the next county over from N2Racin88---yeah, Wyandotte--- ---and feel that proposed merger is poison!!!!!!!!!!

Sprint hired thousands, made some really erroneous business decisions and therefore has been cutting so much there is nearly anything left----the company hired hatchet men---and they were really good at chopping.

I used to see 50+ Sprint employees every weekend on Habitat for Humanity sites---and the company sponsored a house every year----now, zilch.

I'll bet money the Nextel sponsorship would dry up pretty quick is Sprint were in charge. :(

NEXTEL would gain the most from the merger. There is talk of it being a big hurdle for this to work because the companies use such different technology. NEXTEL really wants to get a piece of the consumer market and Sprint has what it wants. If all goes well and Sprintel or whatever they would call it sticks with NASCAR then the Kansas City market would surely get more exposure as NEXTEL would more then likely move its core group to the Kansas City area. Why? Check this out. They just opened this campus up a few years ago about 5 minutes from my house. Plenty of space is available.

I have to agree because my neice used to work for Sprint and even relocated to KC, then went thru a reorganization thing and was let go. She was in upper management.
Nextel is a "new kid on the block" and I think that during my lifetime there will be a new Nascar Sponsor, no more Nextel Cup.

hey Handymac u from crimedotte hey? Me and N2 were born and raised there, I moved back to the dotte, so where abouts in the dotte u live?

This is the Number 1 reason you don't go with a company that has and industry with a history of merging. Visa.... never will merge..... Bud.. never will merge.... This going to get nasty I think. NASCAR is going to end up paying for it in the long run. This really has the potential to hurt the sport.

W.O.P, my thoughts exactly.

NASCAR will suffer in the long run, and that's sad.

Steve---Edwardsville---out by Bonner Springs---Wy. Co. is now all KCK---except for Edwardsville and Bonner.

Should have kept smokin those winstons. Maybe a hard liqour co. will step up to the plate when Sprintel decides to leave our boys hanging. And they will leave our sport hangin. Damn shame that it couldnt just stay grassroots with winston. Im losing faith real quick with this sport too.

I don't know a thing about the particulars of this merger........only that it appears it will happen. What I do know about mergers is that when both companies agree it's called a friendly merger (as opposed to a hostile takeover). This appears to be a friendly merger which in my mind means both companies will become one voluntarily. Now why would two companies decide to become one if it wasn't because both companies have common interests and common goals? It would seem pretty evident to all involved that a major sponsorship (where a legal contract is signed, sealed and delivered) must be honored. I'm sure there will be changes put forth by Sprint/Nextel as far as NASCAR is concerned.........just what those changes will be remain to be seen. I'm not ready to start with all the dire forecasts..........those changes could be quite good for the sport!! But knowing the reaction of many fans to the change last year with the points system, I figure there will be lots of bitching and complaining no matter what happens.

And as for Winston remaining the sponsor...........it was R.J. Reynolds that wanted out at the end of contractual time frame. NASCAR had no choice but to seek new sponsorship. Nextel won. And now it looks like Sprint won too.

speaking of merger....we have cingular, when they merged with AT&T...we got one bar at home, now that is a BIG IMPROVEMENT over no bars here in the hills of LA.....guess you could say we live in the sticks of LA, no signal......but hey one bar is one bar, maybe soon it will be 2 , then 3 etc.......I even got to call out..... :beerbang: :beerbang: :beerbang: :beerbang:

One very good reason for the merger is that they both have around 25,000 antennas. Combined these 50,000 antennas will give them both extreme coverage. Either of their signals will be hard to beat.

I've never used Sprint but have a friend that does..........their coverage seems reasonable out here where the valleys and canyons block signal for all cell phones. Now, Nextel is another story!! :) I had the "pleasure" of carrying one of those Nextel phones for about a year since the company I worked for used that service. I could never depend on Nextel to work......no matter where I was. I worked in Lancaster, CA out in the Mohave Desert where it was flat as a pan cake for 50 miles in any direction........Nextel would work one day and the next be as dead as a door nail. Sometimes it would change by the minute. I would wind up using my personal Cingular phone more than the company phone.

Maybe the merger with Sprint will improve that........heck, anything would likely improve what I experienced with Nextel. :D

Now you can call ME! I have Cingluar as well, and I'm very pleased with it!
Have we seen the one and only "Nextel Cup Champion"

I read somewhere that it is keeping the Nextel Cup name for 2005 but it might change after the 2005 season. I also read that instead of it being called the "Chase for the Nextel Cup" it might be changed to the "Sprint for the Nextel Cup".
