File this in the "internet meme gone bad" category.

Two 12-year-old girls stabbed another 19 times because of Slenderman. This all happened in the Milwaukee suburb where I was born and raised (Waukesha). It's all over the news in the entire metro area, and now getting national attention.

For those not hip to the internet meme, Slenderman is a faceless man who watches you when you aren't looking. Or something. I don't know, the whole thing seemed stupid to me because I'm an adult who's not afraid of the dark. But two girls thought it was real - from the article (emphasis mine):

“Many people do not believe Slender Man is real,” one of the girls told police — and she wanted to prove the skeptics wrong.

In the CreepyPasta hierarchy, the girls explained, Slender Man — a paranormal Lurch-like figure — is the leader, followed by the killer, who is just above the proxy. In order to be a proxy, you have to kill someone to show your dedication to Slender Man.

[...]

The complaint says the girls learned that “Slender” lives in a mansion in Nicolet National Park — and that the girls planned to walk to the fictional Slender Man’s mansion and become one of his proxies after killing the unsuspecting victim.

The girls expressed little remorse over the attack, according to police.

First of all, my family has a lake cottage about 10 miles from Nicolet National Park. Creepy. Secondly, it's about 180 miles from Waukesha. Long walk for 12 year olds. Maybe Slenderman was going to give them a ride.

They're going to be charged as adults, although I'm sure their attorneys will try to get them off on some mental insanity defense.

I saw it on the news. Damn that's nuts.

Saw that too, very shocking but unfortunately not uncommon enough. Makes one wonder if movies and video games don't affect kids more than some would argue. But in order to keep this from going podium I'll stop at that, just sad for all the families involved. What were these kids thinking.

There is true evil in the world..splains it for me anyway. And knowing the press, this might not be the real story, but one that works for them to interest the masses

when i was young every so often the news would have a story about the evil like this, now the news is all about the evil like this and every so often you hear of good deeds. what's the world gonna be like in another 20 years.

Those girls are obviously screwed up and deserve punishment, but I think that there is a reason adults are charged as adults and kids should be charged as kids (especially under 15).

I had to go to the hospital for an appointment with a specialist and there are still about a dozen news vans parked outside. Waiting for word on the victim's condition I guess.

I don't know. There's an interesting debate to be had there for sure. I'd lean towards trying them as adults. The juvenile criminal justice system is setup for (relatively) petty crimes like stealing a bike or graffiti. A premeditated stabbing is pretty serious by comparison.

Puzzling to me is when youngsters who do these violent crimes are caught they offer no valid reason and show zero remorse.

I agree that the juvenile system needs reform, but in my mind there needs to be some distinction made between kids who are certainly not as mature as adults and how the justice system deals with them. For instance, at what age should someone be locked up forever? 12, 11,5? There needs to be a clear mark so it can be applied fairly.

that is because they haven't developed as human beings yet, some never do, the prisons are full of them.

Does anyone ever offer a valid reason as to why they commit these despicable crimes?

let the world know how vicious they are and lose their leniency............

We, as adults, are required to be responsible for everything we own which can harm others - except for one thing.

I don't care if this goes to the Podium or not - I'm going to state my opinion. People need to be held accountable for the actions of their children. Maybe then they'd take that responsibility seriously and stop blaming everything else in the universe for their failures.

Stabbing victim is starting school this week.

WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) -- The 12-year-old Wisconsin girl who nearly died after she was stabbed 19 times is back in school.

A spokesman for the girl's family says it has been a summer of doctor's appointments, surgeries, specialists and recovery. Stephen Lyons says the girl has been eager to go back to school in Waukesha. She started the 7th grade on Tuesday.

Lyons tells WITI-TV ( http://bit.ly/1tt3UBZ ) that the girl and her family continue to attend therapy sessions to deal with the emotional scars of the ordeal.

Court documents say two classmates plotted for months to kill the girl to curry favor with a fictional Slender Man character they read about online. One of two preteens accused in the stabbing has been ordered to receive treatment rather than stand trial.

"Enough evidence to go to trial"?

They told investigators they believed killing Leutner would curry favor with the figure.
