Don't know that there are very many hockey fans here (if there were, I'd have figured this would be a thread already), but if you are, the most exciting time of the year in all of sports is here. Playoff hockey in less than two hours.
How do you figure the first round plays out? I say something like this:
East:
New York over Ottawa in 5 - Typical 1 versus 8, don't think there will be any surprises here. The Rangers are an all around force, I can't see Ottawa matching them in any area.
Boston over Washington in 6 - If it comes down to 5 on 5 play, the Bruins shouldn't have too much trouble. The man behind the Caps bench makes them easy to root against, but that's neither here nor there.
New Jersey over Florida in 7 - I like What the Panthers did during the regular season, and they can make it an interesting series, but there just isn't enough to get passed NJ's all around game.
Pittsburgh over Philadelphia in 6 - The Pens have everything going for them now, and there's a good chance Philly ends up beating themselves in a war of a series
West:
Vancouver over LA in 7 - The more interesting of the 1 v 8 series'. The Kings play a kind of game Vancouver has a hard time with, and I still don't think they have the makeup of a Championship team. They do ultimately take this one though.
St. Louis over San Jose in 5 - St. Louis is exactly what Boston was two years ago. A bit of a surprise team that plays a physical, defensive game with great goaltending and a lot of heart. I think they handle the underachieving Sharks pretty easily
Chicago over Phoenix in 4 - I think this will be the only sweep of round 1. Suffice it to say there isn't really anything special about the Coyotes.
Detroit over Nashville in 7 - Don't really know what way to go with this one. Given that Nashville is essentially a goalie and two defensemen, I think Detroit wins this on pure talent. Best series in the west though.
Looks like I took the safe road here.
