How many times have you been to your local track and hear the P.A. person telling people to stay away from the fence? This is why.

Damn how did the driver fair?

I think back to the days when the fence consisted of two 2 x 8 boards nailed to 6 x 6 posts stuck in the ground. Race tracks in those years were primarily designed for horse racing so fence was not a necessity. The horse raced during the week and the stock cars on the week end.

Gas tanks made from beer kegs and an metal sign attached between the driver and gas tank strapped to the frame inside what was the trunk of the car when roadworthy. No three or four point safety belts, school bus seats with a chain wrapped around the frame and attached to each end of the seat belt. My first "crash" helmet was an old - and this was in 1957 - helmet used in the day. I survived two years of racing like that. Then took over the job of starting races from the edge of the racing surface. No starters and in that time. WILD!! And foolish!!
