Sterling Marlin, Darrell Waltrip lead fight to save Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway

Metro Nashville Council votes not to raze racetrack

The Nashville Speedway lives on after the Metro Council heard from the largest audience in recent memory Tuesday and voted not to destroy the racetrack at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds.

The council voted to amend legislation that would have demolished the track and helped Mayor Karl Dean redevelop the 117-acre fairgrounds. The council decided instead to order up a master plan for the Metro-owned site.

But while the amended, unanimously approved bill — which still needs final approval next month — allows the Board of Fair Commissioners to keep racing going at the speedway, fair board members have shown little interest in that in recent months, complaining repeatedly about the track's financial performance.
