Steve Byrnes of SPEED answered my question ! ! :-)

I haven't read the whole interview yet but I did read your question and his answer. Good question and an interesting answer.

As I added in a comment to the interview, I would love to have the opportunity to talk to Curtis Turner. I want to know the story of the bear and the airplane.

My MIL once dated Curtis. I'll see if she will tell me a story about him this weekend. Oh, and she once dated Bruton Smith as well, but he was just a hick then.

It would be great to hear a Curtis story. Oh, and Bruton is still a hick, but a smart and wealthy one now.

That was a great question TRL! I wonder if Junior Johnson still has his still and runs rum (although I did see that he got a liquor license).

Kat, these days JJ is mostly legit, though... My neighbor, who is my doctor, has a spread up in the mountains and is joined on one side by land that JJ owns. There is a creek that runs through my neighbor's property and at one time a few years ago, there was a bunch of foam that seemed to overtaking the creek at one area. Jack, my neighbor, brought this up at an owners meeting and asked if anyone knew what it was. No one answered, but after the meeting, Jack said that many of the owners talked to him and said that he shouldn't say anything. Jack thought hmmmmmmm. Then, a few weeks later, and I swear this is the truth, revenuers knocked at his door and wanted to question him about what he saw. He told them that it apparently was nothing and that is all went away, though in reality, it hadn't. Jack told me that it scared him half to death. I asked what became of it all and he said nothing. The next week, Jack brought me a mason jar of what he called some "really great stuff". It's still in my cupboard and I'm assuming it's still great, but I'm no touching it. :) All in all, Jack never did tell me what happened up there, but he hinted that there is more than one still working near his property. JJ might not have been the maker of this stuff, but I'm sure he knows where it came from.

Send it my way buck! :D

That's neat TRL! :)

I got on racingone.com one day at school, and i noticed that Mairo Andretti was on there for chat. I really did not know what to ask, so i just did the lame old thing and asked if he had any advice for an up and comming racer. and he Anwsered it. He told me i need to check out this book that he did the forwading to. I did a screen shot and it's on my up drive, Ill try to up load it.

Also, before my 1st race as a driver, Ken Schrader just happaned to be at the track that night. I asked him if he had any advice and this is what he told me "Yeah, sell the car and take up golf, forget this s#!t"

Lappy, Kenny's advice might be the best overall. :) As for my MIL, I will be sure and post what she tells me, but you have to understand that this is an 80 year old woman.

Looking forward to any stories you can get out of her. Sounds like "that 80 year old woman" had an interesting life. I enjoy listening to stories of those considered elderly as they have a lot to tell, if we listen.

You know, I wrote a big reply to this in response to my MIL, but, i looked up at the thread's subject line and thought to myself, it isn't about me. TRL, you must really feel wonderful having had something like this done with you. I could write all about what might happen to me or someone I know, but you are surely in extecy. Good for you.

I thought I might bring this to a close since I said that I would post what she told me. First off, she said that when she dated Curtis, she was but 14 and he was 19. She told me that they held hands and that was it. They went to a movie and he was a perfect gentleman. I asked her if she was sure that it was Curtis Turner that she dated since she said he was a gentleman. She laughed and said, yes, but he was still pretty young at that time. As for me, I just couldn't believe that she was able to date at the age of 14. She said that at that time, she was staying with her grandmother in Virginia, Ferrum to be exact.

Not much of a story, but that's all I could get out of the old gal. :)
