DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR is placing drivers Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart on probation for six races, beginning with Sunday's Daytona 500.

The punishment follows a confrontation between the two former series champions, who wrecked in practice last week and then carried it into the NASCAR officials' trailer.

NASCAR says the probation stems solely from the on-track portion of their clash, when the drivers deliberately used their cars as battering rams.

Okay I am not sure I see where Tony did anything wrong to warrant probation. Yeah there was an on-track incident where they got together and each person can decide who was at fault for that but the only "retaliation" I saw was Kurt Busch ramming Tony's car. He freaking stopped and Busch kept ramming him!!

Is this what NASCAR's been talking about with all this stuff of they're gonna let drivers be themselves?

Good job getting back to the basics NASCAR.

WTF did Tony do?

Skurt, AND ONLY SKURT, kept ramming Stewart's car.

If they are going by what took place on the track, then Stewart deserves no probation. Even though they won't say it, sounds like the stories about Stewart punching Busch must be true and that's why Stewart is also getting probation. Otherwise, that's a bunch of bull.

I agree with you. What a crock by nascar. This is part of their quote:

"And while it was Busch who slammed his car into Stewart’s as they exited the track, Poston said both drivers were punished because they were involved. "

Nothing happened on track to warrant probation for either driver. What Kurt did on pit road may have warranted probation. I believe they also put Tony on probation for slugging Kurt in the trailer.

I think that nascar has been less than truthful with their press release.

The only evidence that could warrant Tony's punishment might the fact that when Kurt pulled away to turn into the garage, Tony pulled ahead and effectively blocked K's entry.

Or, maybe Tony did take a swing at him. LOL

Kenny Schrader had me in stitches last night when he called Tony his "hero". ROTFLMAO

Can someone tell me what being on probation on NASCAR means nowdays?

From what Andy posted:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23130147/

“In the past we’ve used ’probation for the rest of the year,’ but it’s never been something that’s been exercised. It never seemed to really mean anything,” Poston said. “Now we are going to take action. If you are on probation for an altercation with another driver, and you have a second incident during that probation period, we are going to take action.”

Thanks Kelloggs, Itwill be interesting to see what NASCAR will do to if someone on probation violates a rule..double probabation? lol

Take action? What does that mean? They don't have the sack to sit down a big-name driver for a race. They can do it to people like Robby Gordon or a young driver like David Ragan or Kevin Harvick his first year. But they'll never suspend a big-name driver.

Ok what exactly is take action???? If this is something that is changing in Nascar i'll be really surprised. Lets have the guys in the big red hauler actually excercise some balls and suspend these guys when they are on Probation ...NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE....then the message will get across loud and clear. If Nascar doesn't do it that way it is just another meaningless slap on the wrist.

Pfffft!!! As I see it from what happened on the track and pit road, Kurt deserved the probation. If Tony nailed him in the hauler, they should tell the truth. I was laughing at Kenny Schrader, too!! LOL

I agree with you.

Nascar must have realized how ridiculous their first statement was on the probation. This came out in today's paper.

Nobody involved in the incident would confirm that Stewart actually punched Busch during the first of their two meetings with officials, as is widely believed, but Pemberton inferred that Busch's penalty was for what happened on the track and Stewart's was for what happened afterward.

"The accident was a racing incident," Pemberton said. "How they conducted themselves after that, after the accident and coming onto pit road and from there through the rest of the evening is why the penalties were equal."

So, that whole thing about letting drivers be themselves was all bs then?

6 race probation isn't that bad. Really it's a non-punishment. Seems like before they would give a year long probation, or they would fine money...or even dock points. 6 race probation isn't much, and the probation itself hasn't meant much in the past.

muggle, I saw that "clarification" earlier. It's like they're admitting something happened without actually admitting it (Stewart punching Busch).

Harvick was suspended in '01 for his actions during the CTS race at Martinsville after he got on the radio and said he was taking a guy out. But that was before he was considered a "big name" driver. I don't remember if he was already on probation then or not.

That was 2002. And, yes, he was on probation because of the incident with the bug eyed dummy at Bristol.

I don't know why all the hub bub about Tony and Kurt, probation, so what ,big deal, life goes on. If your favorite driver is Tony it was Kurts fault and if Kurts you favorite driver it was Tony's fault, it was prolly a racing deal and I still think Tony put himself in a bad prediciment, the cars have brakes for a reason, IT WAS PRACTICE, Life goes on!!!!! :beerbang: Duane

Duane, we all know where you are coming from. But in plate racing, even plate practice, it's run over or be run over. With cars to tight, if someone rolls completely out of the gas or even hits their brakes, the person behind them is going to drill them. So it's run over or be run over.

Agreed. And that would be totally unfair if he hadn't clocked Busch in the face afterwards. I mean seriously. Let's just punch people because they piss us off and are jerks. We'd all be up to our necks in lawsuits by this point if that's the way everyone was. They need to try, just a little bit, to get over themselves.

The on track thing was just a racing incident. I believe that 99% of us recognize that. The probation's were for Kurt ramming Tony and for Tony throwing a punch at Kurt. Neither are acceptable. (LOL, especially if Tony didn't connect)
