It comes as no great shock to some that the report of Tony driving for Andretti may have been premature at best. Don't know how to characterize it at worst.
From the Indy Star:
NASCAR Winston Cup champion and Indiana native Tony Stewart might change his mind and participate in next month's Indianapolis 500. But he has not decided yet, he told The Star on Sunday.
"When I'm ready to say something, we'll send out a press release," he said.
However, Stewart denied weekend reports that he will join Andretti Green Racing for this week's test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the upcoming race. He said he has not spoken with anyone from Michael Andretti's team, which needs a replacement for injured Dario Franchitti (fractured back).
"(The Internet) was the first I'd heard about (the possibility)," Stewart said.
A team source said late Sunday that no driver decision has been made and won't be before Tuesday.
Stewart, a five-time 500 starter, has not participated in his home race since 2001 when he finished sixth for Ganassi Racing. Chip Ganassi's team is another possibility for the 1997 Indy Racing League champion as it pursues a three-car operation for the 500. Tomas Scheckter and Scott Dixon are the team's regulars.
Since winning the Winston Cup championship last November, Stewart, of Columbus, Ind., has emphasized that his priority is defending his crown. The Coca-Cola 600 in Concord, N.C., follows the Indy 500 on May 25. Stewart attempted the difficult Indy-Charlotte double in 1999 and 2001.
