These rumors will be out there until he re-signs with Gibbs or has signed deal with another team.

Stewart to leave JGR? UPDATE: Sources tell Sports Illustrated that #20-Tony Stewart is working on the final stages of a deal to move from Joe Gibbs Racing to Haas CNC next season. Considering the ramifications of such a move, no one's admitting anything quite yet, as you'd expect. When reached for comment, Haas CNC Racing spokesman Ron Mench claims there's been no communication between Stewart and the organization. Stewart's PR spokesman Mike Arning was noncommittal ("I've heard what you've heard," when asked about Haas CNC) but he reminded SI [Sports Illustrated] that Stewart's contract with Gibbs runs through the 2009 season. "He's there this year and he's there next year," claimed Arning. "And I know for a fact that JGR is interested in retaining Tony for '10 and beyond. They'd like him to retire at Joe Gibbs Racing. As Tony's said many times, 'Nothing's broke. Why change it?' Tony's going to have a lot of options in front of him; why wouldn't he? But I don't see [an early out happening] ... everyone is going to live up to the terms of the contract that runs through '09." However, sources are adamant that not just the talking, but deal-making is already taking place for Stewart to go elsewhere. And, while sometimes a formidable opponent, contracts can be easily bought out, as Jamie McMurray and Kurt Busch have shown us in recent years.(Sports Illustrated), am sure this will be much dicussed about over the weekend at Talladega.(4-23-2008)
UPDATE: Tony Stewart has begun discussion with Joe Gibbs Racing officials about his future with the company, ESPN.com has learned. And that future, sources say, is questionable. Multiple sources close to the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity said Stewart told Gibbs officials that he'd like to be released from the final year of his current driving contract, which expires at the conclusion of the 2009 season. "He definitely has some options," JGR president J.D. Gibbs said. "To me it's no different than any of the options he's had before. The reality is he's racing here through 2009. There's no ifs, ands or buts about that one. Our stance is he's racing for us through 2009." Sources said Stewart is intrigued by the thought of team ownership. One potential scenario mentioned was a partnership with Haas/CNC Racing, under which Stewart would own as much as a 50 percent stake in the race team that currently fields the # 66 and 70 Chevys. Under that scenario he would drive one of those two machines. Such a move would reunite Stewart with Chevy, which sources said was of the utmost importance to the driver, given that he's driven for General Motors for most of his career, and that GM sponsors Stewart's open wheel sprint car program.(ESPN.com)(4-24-2008)

....didn't I just argue with someone over having a stake in the team?

I would think RCR or even DEI before Haas CNC.

I think Labonte going to RCR is a done deal. I think Stewart was headed that way end of last year, but he couldn't or wouldn't get out of his Gibbs deal for two years. Chevrolet seems hell bent to get Stewart back in the fold and he wants to go that way himself. Looks like I'll have to start shopping for something other than "20" gear next year.

:D
But does he pull the trigger? What does HAAS get out of the deal? I doubt they turn over 50% of the team with nothing on their side.
Bigger question is, does Zippy break his contract and go with him? He's signed beyond 09, right?

I am one of the ones banking on him quitting the 'show' all together and going dirt racing full time. He has made his money its time for him to get back to having fun again.

Zippy is signed through 2009. I don't see Tony leaving him behind. I think if anything happens it'll be one of those; "we'll announce at the 2009 500 and start in '10" So, we'll have all season to talk about it. That'd be smart for sponsors too. Then, there's no buyout needed. Zippy gets to go too, most likely as GM or something, and it's the number 66 "Stewart/Haas Racing" sponsored by :gulp: HOME DEPOT Chevrolet at the 2010 500. :)

..yeah, because like UPS with DJ - I can't see anyone else driving that ugly orange car around.

That COULD happan. I could see him running in a few Nationwide and Truck races a year. Maybe a handful of Cup races also, but no were near full time. Tony seems to like Dirt racing a heck of a lot better. There is really no money in it. You will spend around 500,000 + to win the UMP points, but are not even going to take home 100,000. I think it was 25,000 to win the championship in the Super Lates last year. (i could be wrong)

But with his radio deal, and everything else he has going (besides NASCAR) i'd say he is set for life. (Unless he kno....ahhh never mind....just another cover up...:D;))

Report: Stewart considering parting company with JGRBy SceneDaily Thursday, April 24, 2008

Is Tony Stewart considering leaving Joe Gibbs Racing and its Toyotas? According to several published reports, the driver is considering returning to driving Chevrolets in 2009.

While a Joe Gibbs Racing team spokesman is denying such a possibility to several media outlets, the reports are circulating widely on the Internet, most drawing material from an anonymously sourced report on SI.com.

Stewart has a contract through 2009 with JGR, though whether or not that could be ended is open to interpretation. Chevrolet officials have gone on record saying they’d like to have Stewart back after JGR switched to Toyotas this season. The two-time champion has dismissed all talk about his contract to date this season, saying that he wanted to focus on racing and have it done by midyear.

In March of this year, at an appearance at The Home Depot, his primary sponsor, in Atlanta, he shrugged off the questions. Asked about signing a contract extension as he celebrated his 10th year with the sponsor and JGR, Stewart was asked if he could go for more.

"I don’t know,” Stewart says. “I’ve enjoyed the first 10, and we’ll see if we’ve got another 10 in us.”

The SI.com story says that Stewart is in the final stages of a move to Haas CNC Racing, the struggling Sprint Cup Series team that currently has only one of its two teams in the top 35 in owners points. The move would include an ownership stake in the organization. The story includes an outright denial from Haas CNC but says that the Stewart camp was noncommittal about rumors he would leave the only Cup team he’s ever driven for.

JGR President J.D. Gibbs talked to ESPN.com and seemed confident that Stewart would remain with his current team.

"He definitely has some options," Gibbs told reporter Marty Smith. "To me it's no different than any of the the options he's had before. The reality is he's racing here through 2009. There's no ifs, ands or buts about that one. Our stance is he's racing for us through 2009."

Last year's car was the best looking on the track.

And to think he owes it all to the paint guy in the Home Depot store he visited 10 years ago. He was going to go with eggplant color sponged on...

I'm not trying to disrespectful, but couldn't I just say right now, "I think Jeff Burton is leaving Childress for (insert team here)", then in one, two, or three years when maybe he is changing, come back and say; "oh look I reported this was coming. I was wrong about the team because we're so far removed now! But I reported it."

I just don't see where anyone can call 'dibs' on something like that. I mean really, we had long drawn-out discussions on here about how Junior should leave DEI, he IS leaving DEI, yada yada. None of us are reporters, but just making discussion. This is how Nostradomous got famous though.

Hey, gas will be $5 a gallon.

Now, in a year when it is you can look this up and tell me what an unbelievable investigative reporter I am. :) With as active as this place is, and as high as it is in the Google rankings when you search "nascar forum", we probably have more than one reporter watching us, and maybe even a driver or two.

Quick - let's start a rumor.

Jeff Gordon hates Pepsi, and secretly drinks Coke in private. That's not a wine cellar; it's a Coke vault!

Speaking of rumors and innuendo; I don't like how this is written:

Although Busch is new to the fold, Hamlin and Stewart are in their third season together and not all has been rosey. The duo has had disagreements on more than one occasion, most recently at Daytona in July last season, when Stewart and Hamlin collected each other 14 laps into the Pepsi 400 and both blamed the other for the crash.

But Busch and Hamlin agree they want what is best for Stewart, and if that means he leaves JGR, then they will support him no matter where he goes.

Now, let me say, I hate Busch, but I like Tony and Hamlin. That said, don't you think those two paragraphs lead you to believe that Busch and Hamlin want Tony gone? I am not saying that's the case, I'm saying it was written that way, and is seems to me, almost on purpose. Like Busch and Hamlin are seeing it as an opportunity for Tony to just move on, not for him, but them. I don't like the way that's laid out, and I think sometimes the problems between drivers are exacerbated by the media.

I know this is a tad off-topic, and I'm not trying to hijack the thread, it just fit under the same umbrella of discussion.
