FORT WORTH, Texas - Tony Stewart was so frustrated after Sunday's Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway that he did more than hint at retirement.

"I'm ready to retire," said Stewart, who spun twice and endured the wrath of Dale Earnhardt Jr. fans during the race. "As soon as I get enough money saved to where I can retire, I'd be more than happy to step away."

The reason for his frustration? For one, he was upset with Juan Pablo Montoya, who slipped in Turn 4 and bounced into Stewart, sending Stewart's No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Chevrolet sideways.

Later, Stewart also spun off Turn 4 while trying to make up a lap on Kurt Busch, with Earnhardt Jr. and Kyle Busch getting collected in the smoke off Stewart's car.

Earnhardt Jr. fans then booed Stewart for the remainder of the race. Stewart, who is good friends with Earnhardt Jr., was clearly bothered by the boos.

"It's like nothing we can do is right," Stewart said. "If we'd have been the one to do that to someone else, we would be slandered in the media for life for doing it. For some strange way, it will be my fault for some reason. It always is.

"Look at all the Junior fans that are mad at me for. I didn't even see what happened to Junior. I know I caused it, obviously. I'm trying to get one of my laps back right there. I'm doing what I'm supposed to do. There's no way in hell I would ever do anything to put Dale Jr. in jeopardy.

"It's disheartening when you have 180,000 people booing you every time you come around. That's what makes this stuff not fun anymore. It's not about the racing."

A few laps before the Earnhardt Jr./Busch incident, Stewart was racing Montoya hard in what Stewart described as a "Matt Kenseth motto" of racing.

"I'm going to race people how they race me," Stewart said. "You earn respect by doing things that are smart out there, and trying to pull out of line with 110 laps to go coming to the green flag [as Stewart said Montoya did] doesn't make much sense. If you race people with respect you get respect.

"If you do stuff like that and try to race people before you get to the start/finish line - then when I raced him, I raced him. And he took us out. That's just what happened."

Montoya said he tried to pass Stewart "three or four times, and he never gave me room."

"He just got really close to me," Montoya said. "He got me loose. I went into him and he spun. ... I went in a little different and got really loose, and I don't know what happened. We touched a little bit, and the next I see he's spinning."

Asked about whether he was disappointed over finishing eighth was a sign he expects to run up front every week, Montoya said his car owner, Chip Ganassi, doesn't pay him to "run 20th every weekend."

"And I didn't come here to run 20th every weekend," Montoya said. "Is it going to happen? Yeah, it's going to happen a lot of weekends, but our aim is to run up front."

A reporter relayed that quote to Stewart, who apparently thought the question referred to Montoya racing hard every lap.

To which Stewart replied: "I guess we'd better get out of his and Chip Ganassi's way then."

Still, Stewart said, Montoya needs to show more patience.

"Maybe Ganassi doesn't pay him to run in the back, but you might want to be just a little bit more patient just long enough to learn everything and how everything's done over here," Stewart said. "He didn't make friends with me today so he won't get any help from me in the future."

Will that future be much longer?

"It's not about the racing any more," Stewart said. "It's really not."

the booers should go find montoya. Oh wait, montoya didn't cause Jr to get wrecked either.

ITS CALLED A RACING ACCIDENT, PEOPLE!

Kellogs you are right about the second Quote. lol

I dont understand why Tony want to call it quits after they booed him? C'mon you gotta have a tougher skin then that. If it were for booes Jeff Gordon would have been half way to China and back a thousand times already. lol

About the Montoya thing, he continues to make drivers angry..he's going to run out of friends..oh wait he doesn't have any. But he better be prepare for what's coming to him.

After the way he treats most fans, he gets what he gives.

Wow! pot meet kettle. LOL
on the first quote, when i was at the speed stage yesterday morning, i heard a story fitting that. A person had found smoke in his car stuck in the busch traffic and asked for his autograph and smoke told them to supposedly F*** off. Then same family met the VP of RCR, and he gave their kid a tour while the parents were at the speed stage, and he was gonna make sure that kid got tony's autograph.

with Tony's current attitude, he won't be missed.

...add one more driver to the chase for whiner of the year

Actually he would be greatly missed....he's one hell of a driver and a great guy.

The guy that should get the bone head award of the day...ok maybe he should get it twice is Kyle Bush.

I would love to be a fly on the wall of the meeting at Hendrick today when he explains why he left the race track like he did.

I've heard several spins already --- one, that Kyle felt sick and had to have an IV --- two, that he thought the car was done and left.

I saw a film clip of him getting out of the car, and he was throwing a fit. He kept his helmet on and stomped off for parts unknown. I imagine the language under that helmet wasn't fit for public comsumption.

So Kyle what did you think of the race today?

"It sucked"

How about your attitude?

"It sucks"

What do you think of Junior nation?

"They suck"

How about Phoenix next week? You get another crack at driving the COT.

"Leave me alone"

No doubt. I've always enjoyed watching him race and his interviews. He's just really been in a funk lately and not nearly as much fun to listen to...his attitude of late is what I wouldn't "miss". No question he's one of the most skilled drivers out there...

I heard also that he had to go to the infield care center. Then I heard he was just mad. Maybe we will find out later. LOL

Tony Stewart didn't purposely cause jr to wreck. I just think alot of people don't like him. He's like the New York Yankees of NASCAR either love him or hate him. When Stewart keeps his cool hes a great driver. When he doesn't keep his cool hes a crazy driver.

A great line to use on Kyle Busch would be "Would you like some cheese with that whine?"

MRM, I'm hurt :( --- I'm a Junior fan. ;)

Then again, after so many years teaching in public schools, you could be right. :D

I'm glad you got it and understood where I came from. If anyone has ever attended a race in person, they'd understand what I mean. These are the same fans that stand up and cheer when Junior passes someone for 23rd place. There's a lot of them that do that.

They are also the same fans that get up and leave when Jr wrecks or exits the race and give you more room to spread out and not be crowded. LOL. You gotta luv em. They were his dad's fans too.

Tony if you want to quit, then just quit......please dont wine about it

The "expert" commenting team at Fox seems to think that every person in the stands are #8 fans.

At least that's what it got from them when they said 200,000 fans started cheering when #8 took the lead Sunday.

Heck last year at the 600 in the closing laps they stood and cheered when he passed a lapped car. It still amazes me that for 600 laps there are those who jump up and screams "here he come" and then Junyer Nation gives him a standing ovation. Its like a permanent wave. Stand-sit-stand-sit. It wears me out just watching them. Its like they think that this time by, even if its the 1st lap, may be the last so they have to celebrate.
And, yeah much of my antipathy towards Lil'E can be traced back to his fans. For the most part they are an obnoxious bunch. More so than other driver fans. And on top of that there are more of them so there's no escaping their idiocy.
For any Lil'E fans present please take a long hard look at yourself. Have I just described you. If so I'm sorry - for those around you... :(

Ah and by looming at your avatar you know all about whining!!! :beerbang:

Yup! No debate there... just makes my comments all the more poignant. :D

Always nice to know he's not alone and have someone else take some of the heat!

Thanks Tony! :beerbang:

Someone please change Tony's diaper and give him a little rash cream.
