#14-Tony Stewart led five times for 74 laps in Monday's rain-postponed Samsung Mobile 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway, but Stewart's 400th career Sprint Cup start ended badly when he was involved in a late-race multi-car accident that left him with his first DNF (Did Not Finish) of 2010. Stewart, who started from the pole and led the race's first 15 laps, was in sixth place on lap 312 of the 334-lap race when a caution came out for David Reutimann's blown engine. When the lead lap cars pitted one lap later, Stewart and crew chief Darian Grubb elected to take only two tires along with the teams of Jeff Burton, Denny Hamlin, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Greg Biffle and Kyle Busch. Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth elected to take four tires, which put them behind the six drivers who opted only for right-side tires. The race restarted on lap 317 with Burton leading, Stewart in second and Hamlin in third. Stewart fell back slightly and as he entered turn four, he and four-time Sprint Cup champion Jeff Gordon, who had restarted eighth, made contact and set off a wild, nine-car accident on the frontstretch. In addition to Stewart and Gordon, the wreck collected Joey Logano, Jamie McMurray, Clint Bowyer, Juan Pablo Montoya, A.J. Allmendinger, Paul Menard and Carl Edwards. The #14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevy suffered heavy damage all the way around and was unable to continue, forcing Stewart to take his only finish outside the top-30 this season. The two-time Sprint Cup champion was checked and released from the Texas Motor Speedway infield medical center without injury. "I came off of (turn) four there and bounced off of Jeff's (Gordon) right rear," Stewart said. "It was just a pendulum and I lost it and got into his right rear, and then I got us to where neither one of us could get away from it. Somebody put me three-wide in (turns) one and two and that got me up to where I got a lot of junk on my tires and that started it. It was my fault. I feel bad about it, about doing something stupid like that. I didn't plan on getting loose, but it is 100 percent my fault." Following the accident, Stewart and Gordon spoke to each other after exiting their damaged racecars. "I think he (Gordon) was worried that I was going to be upset about it on his side," Stewart said. "It wasn't his fault, obviously. I got a chance to see it in the infield care center, it is definitely my fault. I apologize to all the teams and drivers that got caught up and their fans for it. We had a really good car there and just a shame that it happened."(SHR)(4-20-2010)

Good for Tony --- but I still think it was partly Tony, partly Carl, and partly Jeff.

Agreed. Though, I think Carl had a little room to slide left and give Tony room. What actually did them all in was that last bounce off of Carl.

I have watched the wreck at least fifty times. I cannot lay blame on any one driver. I was just dang glad to see ten of the old dogs fighting and scratching for a single spot.

That was the best dang race I have seen in a long while. :beerbang:

Everyone was being very aggressive.Tony didn't cause the crash, everyone refused to give up their line.Great racing.I am glad that we are talking about aggressive driving and not about drivers riding around and collecting points.

It was GO TIME and everyone went for the same piece of track.:D

I don't know why he took the blame because it wasn't really his or anyones fault. It was just racing.....

Instead of a driver taking blame, I'd rather see the drivers point fingers. Wrecks happen. It's part of racing. On track rivalries are created over these types of incidents. Why is it so important for us fans that a driver take the blame for a wreck? I don't get it.

LOL! I think it was just a racing deal too. Tony shouldn't have taken the blame from what I can see. I've watched it a bunch of times and I can't point out any one thing done. Sure, maybe if Carl didn't hit him, it wouldn't have happened, but if Tony wasn't checking up, I don't think Carl would have run into him. That accident just made me sick since so many good drivers were taken out.

Tony might have been mellowed that day - maybe it was the hits, because he's been raising hell with the media all year. I think they're going to start pulling straws to see who has to ask him the questions. :D

I just knew when that crash happened(knowing Tony all these years) that he would get out all angry and blame either Edwards or Gordon for it and throw a hissy fit. But he got out and.......was smiling........

It's like all that attitude that made him famous is slipping away.

I think that it's simply part of Stewart's persona.

The next wreck, he may get out and blame Goodyear, Nascar, the Pope or all of 'em combined.

Stewart likes to keep the media in suspense and it makes him the character that he is.

Plus, he also came from open wheel and we all know about those guys, correct? ;)

One word....bi-polar :D

If Tony thought it was someone elses fault, I have no doubt he would have had some choice words about them. As much as some of each drivers' fans would love to have a hate-fest between Tony & Jeff, they've come a long way since those days of mouthing off and threatening to wreck each other. They've grown a true respect for one another through the years, even before Tony became involved with HMS via his team.

I have to admit that when Jeff got out of his car walked toward Tony, I was afraid he was going to blow up at him since he was on a mission & being successful at it! I was relieved when that wasn't the case and he wanted to make sure Tony wasn't upset with him.

You need to get to know some of the media who are with him every week. He's been pretty brutal to them since the end of last year. He's said some doozies to them. The old Tony is still there, you just need to know where to find him. LOL :D
