Parked for the day and not allowed to qualify, will start 41 and 42.

The "egg carton" template didn't fit is how I understand it.

Sounds like they will likely will get a suspension as well.

Its on NASCAR.com too. Fenders too low. Looks like another 100pt/100k fine and some suspensions.

Those fellas will never be accused of not pushing the envelope. lol:einstein:

Gordon, Johnson fail qualifying inspection
By NASCAR.COM
June 22, 2007

SONOMA, Calif. -- Nextel Cup Series points leader Jeff Gordon and defending series champion Jimmie Johnson, both of the Hendrick Motorsports stable, have failed inspection at Infineon Raceway.

The cars of neither Gordon, the defending race champion, nor Johnson will be allowed to practice or qualify Friday.

NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said both cars "failed the initial inspection ... as a result of body modifications found to be outside NASCAR tolerances. The front fender [of both cars] was modified outside of NASCAR regulations. They did not meet the C2 template inspection."

According to Poston, Hendrick Motorsports' No. 5 and No. 25 cars, for Kyle Busch and Casey Mears, passed inspections.

Poston added, "both teams have an opportunity to repair and resubmit their cars" for inspection up to the start of practice Saturday. "Assuming they pass inspection, they can practice [Saturday] and start at the rear of the field [Sunday]," he said.

"It's important to know this is a Car of Tomorrow penalty," Poston said of the short-term severity of the sanction. "The inspection process and NASCAR's response to Car of Tomorrow violations are going to be more severe.

"We're going to keep this car in check. It's important to know all cars in the field are starting out equal and have the ability to win the race."

Poston said both teams' crew chiefs, Steve Letarte on the No. 24 and Chad Knaus on the No. 48, would be allowed to supervise the repairs, and at this point, NASCAR had no plans to immediately confiscate the cars.

The decision on further penalties would be made next week, Poston said.

If not, a lot of people will blow a head gasket. The standard has been set for penalties. If either or both of them get anything less than the 100/100k penalty, I think a number of hedging fans will finally jump ship. Most fans are tired of seeing the Hendrick bunch "benefit" from penalties.

As far as the qualifying thing goes, Robin Pemberton in the Speed interview said that the 24 and 48 not being able to qualify is because they will not be able to be inspected again until before tomorrow's practice.

And the HMS guy pretty much said the same thing:

So it isn't so much a penalty as it is that they failed to pass inspection and
Nascar isn't going to allow them to have a special, unscheduled inspection whenever they get back to the garage and get the cars fixed. Instead, they will have to wait until the next scheduled inspection, which isn't until tomorrow. And then Nascar will look at it all on Monday to determine what penalties may be warranted.

I think that's pretty fair. If Nascar wants to give a penalty of 100 points or whatever, like Junior, then we'll see. But as of yet, they haven't been penalized, they just failed inspection and have to wait until the next scheduled inspection.

Actually, the cars have now been passed.

So what I was saying isn't entirely correct. I misunderstood Robin P.

They have been penalized- Nascar isn't going to give them their stickers until tomorrow morning.

#24 and #48 pulled from practice, qualifying after failing inspection: NASCAR officials announced that #24-Jeff Gordon [points leader] and #48- Jimmie Johnson [3rd in points] will not be allowed to practice or qualify Friday after their cars failed the initial morning inspection at Infineon Raceway. The front fenders on both the #24 Chevy of Gordon and the #48 Chevy of Johnson had front fenders that were too wide. The cars did not fit the template for a Car of Tomorrow entry. Both drivers will have to start at the rear of the field for Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 300 event on the 2-mile Infineon road course. Gordon, the season points leader, won at Infineon one year ago. His five victories at Sonoma are the most among active drivers. "Both teams have the opportunity to repair their primary cars and resubmit them for inspection," NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said. "If they pass that inspection, they'll be allowed to practice on Saturday." Neither crew chief -- Steve Letarte for Gordon and Chad Knaus for Johnson -- has been suspended for this race. But additional penalties are likely for both drivers and crew chiefs next week. NASCAR officials have warned all teams that any violations involving the COT would results in severe punishment. The #8 Chevy team of driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. was penalized 100 points and crew chief Tony Eury Jr. was fined $100,000 when a pre-qualifying inspection at Darlington showed the brackets on the rear wing were modified out of regulation.(ESPN.com)(6-22-2007)

Well CK should get the boot for the rest of the year, but it won't happen. How many times has he had violations, been fined and then been suspended? Yeh he is a likeable guy and all, good crew chief, but damn....how many times do you have to get caught before the hammer falls??

i doubt they'll be penalized points. Suspensions? probably. points and money? unlikely.

they're losing points by starting in the back.

Remember, NASCAR warned the teams at the beginning of the year ---
you mess with the COT we'll begin at 100 pts and $100,000.

They'd better stick to their guns.

I will go on the record that this time around the penalty will be a little stiffer then Juniors team received. The portion that is stiffer this time around is not allowing them to practice or qualify. They will still still be subjected to the crew chief suspensions and point deductions. The next offender may just be sent home and NASCAR will drive that point home in a statement or a press conference. Let's see how close that comes to reality.

They were just trying to make Dale Jr feel right at home ;)

Seriously though, this is going to hurt these two teams somewhat in the points standings, but not so much in the long run. It's not like either team is in much danger of missing the Chase because of anything NASCAR is likely to do about this. No matter how much of a points lead Jeff Gordon would build would be reduced to 5 freaking points after race 26 anyway. Thanks to NASCAR's contrived playoff or "chase for the championship" as they call it, there is no longer much reward for dominating the entire season as the old champions did. Jeff could win every one of the next 10 races or so and it wouldn't mean anything when the playoff starts. :(

In summary, yes it sucks but it isn't nearly the end of the world. Jeff and Jimmie will be fine. :)

No suspensions or fines will come from this. Nascar wont touch hms

not so. In he 2007 revisions, each driver recieves 10 bonus points at the start of the chase per win.

I would kinda like to see them not penalize them, just to watch the conspiracy theorists freak out.:beerbang:
It's not going to happen though, HMS or not, I do believe the hammer will fall over this. Like others said, 100pts and 100g's, along with CC Suspensions, and what they get at the track this weekend. Going to the back at Sonoma is worse than almost anywhere to receive that penalty.

HMS caught cheating?

All I can say is that if Rousch has an alibi, this must be a mistake

As to a points deduction big whoop. All that needs to happen is a non-Chase driver to win the race. That way the 10 point award does not go to a competitor for the Championship. Jeff and Jimmie still have their 40 points lead once the Chase starts. Now, if they lose Steve Retard or Chad for a period of time that may make a difference. It depends on for how long, where they finish and who wins. Again if non-Chase drivers win any races during any potential CC suspensions it doesn't really matter in the end. I don't think either one is in danger of falling out of the Top 12.

History has shown that #48 does just fine without Knauss.

The question is, how do JJ & JG feel about Barry Manilow tunes?

Well that does explain the Lil'E commercial from a few seasons ago where he was pounding on the dash because his player stopped. He probably can't drive without his Manilow. That's what keeps him so calm out on the track.

Maybe he's just "Born to be mild".
