NASCAR officials are expected to announce this week that they will lift their long-standing ban on hard liquor sponsorships for next season. Several teams are hoping to court hard liquor companies, including Roush Racing and Richard Childress Racing. Under NASCAR's current rules, teams are allowed to advertise beer and so-called "malt beverages" such as Smirnoff Ice.(USA Today)

Pass the Jack baby!!!!

It really seems pretty dumb to ban hard booze, but allow the beer companies. If you are going to alow booze then allow all of them.

I kinda think that they won't approve it now that Nascar is sooooo PC.

This decision had nothing to do with being PC and everything about keeping FOX and NBC happy.

IF NASCAR approves hard liquor advertisers it will be because NBC and FOX have signed off on it. The networks have to this point refused to carry hard liquor advertising before 9 PM.

The hard liquor thing is voluntary on the part of the networks. The cigarete thing is mandated by law.

Hard liquor advertising is starting to appear more and more on television (although the amount is still very minor.)

The point is that anyone that is going to spend $15 - $20 million dollars a year on a sponsorship is going to supplement it with and advertising campaign and they can't do that if FOX, NBC, and TNT refuse to run the ads.

According to USA Today, today, (LOL) NASCAR HAS APPROVED THE HARD LIQUOR SPONSORS!!!! Sooooooooooooooo, fans and fellow posters, do you see the wavecoming????? Don't inhale, ya might get inebriated on the fumes!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D

This will be a good combination ....hard liquor and guns.

Let it in I say.

I already tried and failed to explain to a ten-year old on Sunday why Jr was being doused with Alcohol....beer and champagne....

It's all the same to the ones we're trying to 'protect'.

What time zone is that for?

As for the cigarette thing, ESPN and Speed Channel still broadcast Winston Cup races.

The cigarette thing is actually a Supreme Court decision. I will try to find the exact law if you want, but it has something to do with the whole lawsuit they have been doing for years that Phillip Morris knew cigarettes were harmful, blah, blah, blah. (personally, as a smoker, I don't know how anyone could think you could inhale ANY smoke daily and think you would stay completely healthy). Anyways, it was initiated that certain magazines can't have cig ads, and no more TV. I think that applies to all hours of the day. Personally I am too young to remember any cig ads on TV. :)

NASCAR officials are expected to announce this week that they will lift their longstanding ban on hard-liquor sponsorships for next season. The move could bring an influx of sponsorship money. Several Nextel Cup teams -- Roush Racing and Richard Childress Racing among them -- are primed to sign deals with hard-liquor companies, including Diageo and Jack Daniels.(Chicago Tribune Wires)

Actually Kat, I have been seeing many commercials for Jack Daniels on TV lately. They are focusing a lot on the master distiller's job. Some on how particular they are, and how they have had only 6 Master Distillers in the history of the company "it seems job satisfaction has never been much of a problem", they say. I will admit that I haven't noticed what time of day they have been on though. I never really gave it much thought.

I guess what I'm saying is that smokes are still being advertised if Winston Cup races are being broadcast. Sitting at Bristol for the weekend can't be all that healthy. Someone will soon be suing Jimmie Johnson 'cause of all the tire smoke they inhaled 3 weeks in a row.

And speaking of dirty air, does anyone know how Nascar deals with California emmession laws?

You need examine the history here. Winston sponsored NASCAR because they were banned from running television advertisements. Winston had been spending millions and millons on TV ads and suddenly had all this money sitting around with no way to spend it.

One thing I know for sure is that you didn't see a commercial for cigarettes in the races and that limited the value.
