Switching drivers during a race

If a driver starts a race, and gets replaced by another driver, should the replaced driver get the p

I vote no, If you get relieved you are done! Why should you get the benifit of someone else. The Owner should get points, not the driver
 
No...after you replace a driver, what's next? A car?

Let em keep running the car, but owner points only. Jr did NOT finish the race in my opinion...and should be reflected as a DNF.

I guess I have misunderstood your poll question. I voted No. I don't think that the relief driver should get the points, but the driver that started the race retains any points won for the entire race.

I think that's what the rule is Maj! :D My, oh my.........we sure like to bitch about rules but when they are changed we really get all wound up, don't we? :XXROFL:

Sure should, and If Sterling had been able to start after neck injuries, he may haave won the Championship!
 
It might be time for a history lesson on relief drivers, but I'm to worn out to go in to it right now....

Maybe on the resident history meisters can file everyone in on the way points used to be awarded to relief drivers and how messy it got ...

Maybe no one was bitching per se.........but from the answers I read it sure seems that a lot of people think the rule should be changed. And if it were changed, I can imagine the bitching then!! :)

And Sterling Marlin chose no to race with his neck injuries on doctor's advice..........good call on everyone's part. Jr chose to race with his burn injuries on his doctor's advice..........good call again. :)
 
I voted YES,mainly for safety's sake.Dale Jr. did have burns and might have been able to finish the race,but at what cost in long term recovery after the race?The way the points are awarded now in such instances allow a somewhat injured driver to run a few laps and have a relief driver(s) standing by to accumulate points,so that the primary driver can indeed get some more rest in the meantime and be in netter shape in the long run.The rule should stay the same,afterall,NASCAR has already made far too many changes this season IMHO.
 
If they switched the rule around Truex could have driven 290 laps on sunday and handed the wheel over to Jr. with 10 laps to go.

I think the way the rule works now is perfect, the guy who starts should get the points.
 
Kenny schrader made a good comparison on INC last night. If a car loses a rear end gear or a radiator, they replace that and the driver continues and gets the points they earn. If the driver is changed the starting driver gets the points. So he was saying the driver is just 1 part of the car that was changed.
 
I think the rule should stay just the way it is, and has been for a long time. I think DW's idea is really stupied about substatute drivers.
 
I voted No because a few years ago when Sterling Marlin was in first in points and got hurt in a wreck McMurrary subed for him and Marlin didnt get points and was out of the points race

But marlin did not start the races.
 
Interesting that you voted NO mrs. nascar. If you remember , spring 2002 at bristol, tony stewart left his ride in 21st place & todd bodine finished the car 15th. Stewart picked up 18 points from Bodine driving the car. That 18, along with the 25 point infraction that Martin was given during the season (totalling 43 points), won stewart the championship. Not to stay on Martin but I remember his crew for a few weeks lifting him into & out of the car because of his serious injuries sufferedfrom a crash but he finished the races. If you can't drive the entire race, no individual driver points should be awarded.
 
No. If you can't finish the race, you don't get the points. I don't understand the point of a relief driver getting the real driver points. The real driver didn't race so dosn't deserve the points, however, I think that the relief driver should be able to get points for himself
 
i don't favor anymore rule changes right now, but it would make more sense if the driver stopped getting creditted for laps once he didn't gets out. i don't think the relief driver should get the points, though, since he didn't take the initial green flag.

i do understand some of the basis for allowing the original driver to earn the points, but i think if there was a bigger emphasis on the owner championship, it would help take care of the overall problem of encouraging injured drivers to race.

on a sidenote, i'm not sure how nascar has traditionally worked situations like this, but i think that a rookie that comes in as a relief driver should have that races counted when determnining that driver's rookie status. i know that to be eligible for rookie of the year, the driver can't start more than 7 races in one season...in this case, i believe truex should have 6 more races that he could compete in and retain rookie status...
 
i voted yes...its a matter of safety, JR COULD HAVE finished the race, but it was in his best interest not to do so
