Sylvania 300 Race Thread

Me thinks this race will be boring as hell. Yawn, what to watch... football, golf or a boring race? Good thing I have all three on the computer.

Why do they always come back from commercial after the restart? That drives me nuts.

you dumbass rusty, they are already using the RCR-DEI combo

Rusty is such an idiot and though I don't care for him, if he's going to stay in the booth, I hope he gets more counceling about what he's doing.

Let's see 41 goes into a slide and they cut away, then jerry says elloitt is in the 21 then corrects himself then he says kenny is subbing for elliott which kenny was the original driver for the 21, kenny has been put back in that car.

What in hell does Johnson know about winning back-to-back cups?

I believe they asked the wrong guy.

But please, those guys are probably as bored as we are. Tiger is now 7 shots in front. With that lead, you'd think the golf is boring as well, but it isn't.

 Cleveland beat Cinci! G-Men went down hard to the Pack. Houston put a whoopin' on the Panthers. Some shockers there in the NFL.
Goooo Bears! and Kahne. <--gotta keep it NASCAR.

I thought the Panthers lost to Green Bay. :idunno:

Nope, not today. The Panthers lost to Houston and Green Bay beat the New York Giants.

Was there a race today?

well if they wouldn't switch drivers every week things would be the way they are suppose to be.:p

Between the ESPN coverage and the race, I ended up zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz for the end of it. These guys are terrible and it would have been nice to have someone else on the air to keep me awake during such a boring race. :director: wake UPPPPPPPP!!!

I know many of us tend to find fault with ESPN and justafiably so as they harp on the same thing over and over - kind of like us :)

But, it seems as though the races have calmed down quite a bit. I mean even the short track races seem pretty boring.

Maybe it's the COT, maybe it's the drivers not wanting to chance fines/probation, I'm not sure but, the last bunch of races - with the excpetion of the show #24/#20/#8 put on a bit ago - nothing much has been happening.

Now I don't mean just in terms of wrecking one another but good hard racing. Of course maybe it's happening and it's just not shown.

Patrick, I was just thinking the same thing. When you think that what has been the most anticipated race of the season only drew a yawn from most of us, then one has to think about what is going on.

I believe it's a combination of all of the changes, from the Chase to the COT to NASCAR trying to diversify the sport and make it an international sport. I read the other day where Brian France is concentrating on the Hispanic area to increase the viewership. The idea of losing so many loyal older fans doesn't phase him in the least. We can get into that in another thread, but for sure, these races have become more and more boring from a fan's view.

My opinion is that it is the slower, less driveable COT that is mostly to blame for the ho-hum racing.

Methinks it has a lot to do with it as drivers themselves comment how hard it is to "move somebody", e.g., JGordon trying to nudge Jimmie Johnson at Martinsville. JGordon tried numerious maneuvers to relocate the position of Johnson's car with little success.

NASCAR's foundation came from the days when the bump and run were part of the sport. Eveybody pisses and moans when the comment is made we watch for the wrecks and declare the racing is more important.

Well, to those who say the racing is more important, you got it.The racing is better, but is as exciting as open wheel or Formula 1. The influx of "other motor sport" drivers coming from less fan friendly arenas into the NASCAR fraternity tend to be somewhat aloof and this is only the beginning.

NASCAR was started by guys banging into each other, wrecking and possibly even geting into physical altercations periodically. Much as I complain about Tony Stewart, he does liven things up a bit even though he is a bit if a twit with a gunpowder mouth.

NASCAR is going in a direction 180 degrees from where they started. As a fan since 1958 (at the age of 22) I see the changes and am losing interest more and more, each week and am not alone in feeling this way.

COT is a good idea but the vehicle needs to be designed to bring back what made NASCAR the spectator friendly sport it used to be.

Ever notice when a race, even in days gone by, failed to create controversy or have a couple of wrecks involving high profile drivers, they were not good races ???? The combination of pushing and shoving, taking a chance at passing between two fast closing cars, the bump and run for the lead or to gain a position, and the subsequent controversy are what made NASCAR a great sport. We are now in evolution of sanitary, low fat, 2% original racing.

If Bruan France keeps changing the sport it will wind up like USAC and CART.

ESPN must've done a horrible job with Richmond because there was great two and three wide racing everywhere every lap.

Blame ESPN for the Richmond race.

Yep, I totally agree.

And, a comment on the Chase. In the "old" system those drivers behind the leader would go all out in every race trying to narrow the point spread. Nowadays, the drivers in the top 12 simply want to stay in the top 12 with no real incentive to catch the leader.

Good point!

Guys aren't pushing it so the points get spread out at the top.

Granted, Johnson cooled down a bit before winning 2 in a row, but sometimes it seems as though they're just crusing around waiting for a break. If it doesn't come, be happy with 6th.

And I am in no way a #24 fan but entering the chase 2nd seed after having that point lead is off kilter, IMO.

I also don't see where international drivers have much to do with it. The few dominant teams have none and it's Nascar making the rules so IMO, it's Nascar's fault.

You are right on NASCAR concentrating on gaining the Hispanic viewers. Here is a short article about how much promoting was done for the Cali race.
(if you want to start another thread on this I don't mind).
Here is a part of an article about it:
Extra Innings: Nascar will unveil an outdoor push in Los Angeles this month with driver Juan Pablo Montoya to support the Sept. 2 Nascar Nextel Cup race at California Speedway in Fontana. Posters will read: "Juan Pablo Montoya tiene un secreto . . . lo quieres saber?" ("Juan Pablo Montoya has a secret . . . do you want to know what it is?"). Those calling a toll-free number on the sign will hear Montoya talking about the race.

There has been a huge push to put JPM out there. I don't know why for sure because they are bringing over other Indy drivers. But I do see a lot of talk about NASCAR losing its old school fans on other forums and such.

I agree the race was pretty boring, I think it is the COT and the Chase drivers being cautious. They all know all they have to do is be consistant. The non chase drivers need to become a factor, but it seems like they are staying out of the way. I can't think of any real excitement since JPM and Happy had their shoving match, and I would have thought since they didn't get fined we would see more of that.

Some very good comments on this. I say congrats to all as it seems that we are mostly in agreement with the problems. Whiz, what a great comment. I whole heartedly agree with everything that you wrote. Great racing is good, but if the event doesn't make you sit on the front of your seat, where's the excitement?

As for the reason NASCAR is hawking all of this to hispanics, the answer is southern Florida and of course, California. It seems that NASCAR has more or less put the idea of gaining the African-American fan base on the back burner and now are concentrating on the hispanics. What ever...but I'm hearing more and more loyal old timers getting fed up with the sport. I'm sure that the main offices of NASCAR is also hearing this, but they are weighing all options and the bottom dollar will ultimately be the bottom dollar. They know that the big money comes from the older loyal set, but if they can gain more than they lose, they will come out ahead. How big of a gamble is this?

Gamble , yes. Wonder how loyal those they are pursuing will be. I talked with some "framers" when they were building a porch for me here in Greensboro, a hotbed of the old loyal fans. They were the type guys that know everything about UNC sports and Nascar. There was no question they are getting fed up with the way things are headed.
