System Mainenance

I'm sure most of you use some form of Windows Operating Systems on your computers. I'm wondering how often you do any system maintenance? I use Windows ME. I do a disk clean up each time I finish any session before I shut down (sometimes more, depends on what I've been doing). I do a scandisk, virus scan, and disk defrag once a week (usually on Saturday). Check for anti-virus and Windows updates about twice a week (always try to remember on Tuesday since Norton normally puts their updates out on that day). And about once a month I clear all the restore points that ME produces to save hard drive space. I have recovered as much as a gig of space doing this......depends on how much I install and uninstall or my messing things up by some dumb tweaking stuff I seem not to be able to resist sometimes!) Does anyone screw around with their computers as much as I do?:)

I'm set up to have Norton run every Sunday am. I kind of a newbie at the computer, so I don't do much messing around, I'm afraid I'll really screw something up and won't be able to fix it. I probably should ge to the local tech school and take one of those adult computers for idiots classes. They have them every six weeks. My friend says they are rally good. The only bad thing is that they are taught by some of the high school students and it's kind of wierd, since we are old enough to be their mothers. But, what the hey, if I can get some info, I'm all for it.

DEW, I have the Norton Systemworks.

BUT if you know what else I may need please let me know. and about those pop ups,and mail washer too.

I believe you or Rayna have the eaddie

I run Adaware, and norton doctor, and defrag once a week,Seems to keep the garbage out for the most part. ;)

Kat, go to Download.com and search for "Pow" (pop up defeater) and "Mail Washer". Both are free and easy to use. But, remember, Download.com puts doubleclick (spyware) on your computer so run Adaware after you get your downloads.

DE, you're even worse than I am! :D

I also have Norton Systemworks, and run Clean Sweep to regain lost disk space once a day, at the end of the day. I have POW running all the time, but seem to have forgotten about Ad Aware lately. I defrag very rarely these days -- maybe once a month -- at least, on this computer, and this partition. I almost always log on to Win2K, which doesn't fragment nearly as much as the Fat32 versions of Windows. (My teacher was right!) I only run a virus scan around once a month, or when prompted. I run the various diagnostic utilities as needed, or when I detect even slightly impaired performance. I don't bother with Windows updates much these days. I did a very thorough job of that when I installed my OS, and respond to prompts when updates are available.

My Dell, on the other hand, runs Win98SE, which used to fragment just looking at the damn thing. I mostly use it to run Photoshop these days which, for some reason, I've been too lazy to install on my Athlon machine, the better of the two. Around a year ago, when it was my only system, it would go through periods where I had to run diagnostics constantly, maybe once every couple of days. Then it would be good for couple of months, and another problem would arise to annoy me. I always suspected some type of virus, but Norton never caught anything of note.

Sorry for the essay!

Even when I ran Windows I didn't run any of those programs.

Now that I run Linux, I don't do any system maintenance. There are no virii for Linux. :)

Next computer I put together will have two hard drives.....one for Windows (since I know nothing about Linux) and one for Linux. Got to learn that system........then I wouldn't mind leaving ole Bill Gates in the dust!! Still wish there was more software for linux.....might make the plunge head first if there were.!:)

Abooja.......Cutie runs an Athalon cpu. It's fine and very stable (probably more so than my Intel) but damn that thing runs hot!! Four fans plus a cpu fan and dual power supply fans and that thing still runs 10 degrees celius hotter than my P4 with two fans (the normal cpu fan, but only a single power supply fan).:)

Yep, AMD processors are known to run much hotter. I've got a super deluxe copper CPU fan in there, along with 3 or 4 case fans (I always forget) and a separate chipset fan. I haven't checked my BIOS in a while, but it typically stays quite cool in there as a result.

Soon after the season is over, I'll probably install Unix on my 4th partition. I've been putting it off all year. I still have a few kinks to work out in my WinXP installation first. I've been avoiding all such work for months now. I've been awful. :(

Paul, is it true that Linux can't get a virus? That must mean the same is true of Unix (on which Linux is based).

Give the destructive little geeks time and they will come up with a virus for linux!:(

I just did a bit of research, and found at least one article that cites a known Linux virus:

http://www.vnunet.com/News/1127965

Another article said that, while Linux wasn't totally impervious to an email virus, it comes awfully close.

Yeah, but not a large percentage of users have linux.....not as much fun to screw with a few when they can screw many!!:)

I have a copy of SuSE 7.2......had it for a couple years. Is it any good? So many distributions out and I know nearly nothing about any of them. Heard Mandrake is most popular.
