McMurray to drive No. 6 for Roush Racing in '07

Jamie McMurray has signed a multi-year contract to drive Roush Racing's No. 6 Fords starting in 2007, sources close to the driver confirmed Thursday morning.

Roush Racing is expected to release a statement on the matter Thursday afternoon.

Chip Ganassi Racing released a statement Thursday morning saying that the team and McMurray would part ways following the 2006 season.

"Jamie's made a decision to go in another direction after we've both fulfilled the commitment that we made to each other in 2002," team owner Chip Ganassi said in the statement.

"We didn't do a good job of conveying to Jamie where this team is headed, but we expect a lot of success with Jamie the rest of this year and next year, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors beyond that."

Sources said McMurray signed the contract with Roush Racing late last week, and speculation began almost immediately that he was on his way out at Ganassi.

No word has been given regarding an interim driver for 2006, but many feel Roush Racing Truck Series driver Ricky Craven is the team's first choice.

McMurray is currently in his third Nextel Cup Series season, all with Ganassi. His lone victory came at Lowe's Motor Speedway in October 2002 while substituting for injured teammate Sterling Marlin.

McMurray currently ranks seventh in the 2005 championship point standings.

Why would Chip want to hold onto a lame duck driver? Not sure I understand that. I'd think that it would benefit both teams if Jamie were allowed to go to Roush starting next year.

I have yet to understand anything Chip Ganassi does. He already seems like he'd be an arse to work for, maybe that is why Jamie has to wait till '07 b/c Chip is being his typical self and will not let him out of his contract.

A contract is a contract....but ya know, it does neither team any good....Chip should let him go and find someone that will drive that car for awhile....its better to start the team gelling sooner rather than later...so now Chip has put the development of both race teams back one more year than he should have.....Im sure Jamie will put every effort into the 42 next year....but who knows how hard a crew is going to work when a driver has given up on them.

Lame duck driver???? 7th in points, 10th or so last year.

The term lame duck is being used in its political form.

yea lame duck...meaning he knows hes not going to be back after next year....means nothing against his performance what so ever....i think he's a great driver.

Why should he let him out?

If Chip thinks Jamie won't put forth his best effort.
If Chip thinks that the crew will have conflictions.
If Chip thinks Jamie may take over some "secrets" out of spite.
And, to get a head start on the next driver if Chip has someone in mind. If he doesn't then keeping Jamie rather than having to change twice would prevail.

Based on team wins this year, both Busch and Cup, and most recent championships, I think Jack Roush already knows all of the secrets.
Jamie caught Chip by surprise, that's all. Besides, we don't know what clauses Ganassi put in Jamie's contract.

This may be more about sponsorship deals and money and less about Chip Ganassi; So a young guy is going to be driving the Viagra car???? That's what I don't think fits...

Have you ever had unhappy employees work for you?

Can't say that I have. But my question was in response to the poster saying that Chip was "being his typical self and not letting him out"

Chip has a driver signed to a contract. If "he lets him out", who will he get to fill his ride that is the quality driver of McMurray?

I beleive I read somewhere that Viagra will not be continuing their sponsorship with the No. 6 car after this season.

Isn't Tide going to the 6?

havent heard...but i have a feeling for some reason that it is...but the only reason i was saying this earlier was because at one point they were talking about Ricky Rudd or Ricky Craven going to the 6 car...and about the same time there were questions thrown out about Tide leaving the 32...so it make logical sense in my mind that would re-join on the 6 car....now that we know either Ricky is not going to the 6 car permantely, i dont know if Tide is going to be on that car...but ive been saying for about a month that i have a weird feeling the 6 car is going to be a bright orange car next year....we'll see...i wouldnt be surprised if is.
