Some will get it. Some will simply find a way to bash Jr. over it. Sometimes perspective is everything. Nice to read that he's learned from his mistakes.

If these days Dale Earnhardt Jr. seems less combative and more productive on his radio frequency during a race, he says team ownership is to thank for it. Still, that doesn’t make it easy.

On Tuesday’s Dale Jr. Download podcast on Dirty Mo Radio, Earnhardt said mounting frustrations in his car’s performance Sunday at New Hampshire forced him to bite his tongue every lap, fearing that his constructive feedback, at any time, could succumb to self-gratifying, counter-productive soapbox rants.

For much of his career when it came to reporting his car’s status, Earnhardt paid little mind to tone or tenacity. He said it took being a team owner at JR Motorsports to recognize the problem with that method of communicating.

“I’ve been on the pit box during the Nationwide (Series) race, and I’ve learned a lot as an owner listening to drivers over the years, and I’ve seen the crew’s mentality once the driver begins to speak,” he said on the podcast. “When a driver’s complaining, a lot of times the team thinks he’s resigning himself to running like crap. As a team, you don’t want to hear that.

“(On Sunday during the Sprint Cup race) I wanted to complain and complain, but I tried to think about how that changes my team’s attitude when the driver is complaining. … I tried not to really bash on the car too much. I tried to keep thinking how we’re going to grind and grind and fix this thing.”

Earnhardt's No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports team climbed to as high as second on Sunday and eventually finished 10th despite starting 28th. Even though he clinched a spot in the 2014 Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, Earnhardt called New Hampshire not one of the more enjoyable weekends for his team, but suggested they will be reinvigorated for their return in September.

“We need a little bit better racecar when we go back,” he said. “I didn’t enjoy seeing how fast those other guys were, particularly Brad Keselowski. We don’t like to get outran like that. That was just an ass whuppin’. I’m sure that’s going to fire up all the guys at Hendrick Motorsports, and when we go back to New Hampshire I feel pretty confident we’re not going to run like we did.”

Communication between the driver and crew chief is significant. It didn't occur to me that the team listens and the tone of the driver affects the team.

i bet him telling Steve what his car needs takes a lot of ciphering on Steve's end. i remember one race, he told him to check with others to see how there cars are doing, and then tell him and he would tell him if his is like that.

I like ol' junior, he's the man. Plus, I just received a text from some prize giveaway thing I entered awhile back saying I won Dale jr designed t shirt!

you know jr is is ALOT smarter than most people give him credit for. something has changed with him. I saw him a while back say how he wished he had worked harder and taken the opportunity with the DEI 8 car better when he was there. I think he now looks back on how good his cars were back in those days and thinks if he had taken it more seriously he could have won even more races and probably a title. He is very responsible with his money and is a guy that watches his personal finances. JR is also pretty good with mechanical things with the car. I love that in a driver, because its reminds me of how I would be as a driver. more of a rusty wallace type guy, although I think I would let the crew do more things they wanted to do. kyle busch is also very knowledgeable with the cars, so much so he could be a crew chief if he wanted.

i don't know hidesert, i see about the opposite with Jr, about all drivers these days will say they wasted some wins from their earlier years, didn't take care of their stuff, like they could have. he could be responsible with his money i don't know, he admits he has an ebay addiction. as far as mechanical wise, i don't see that in him at all. to me if he has a good car, he's a good drivers. still, he shouldn't have left Newman at the airport.

Respect for Jr. on this. Nice post man. Have to admit, however, I listened to him on the scanner in Fontana on my first trip there. Something was wrong with his brakes. He queues the radio and says, "190 mile an hour into 3, and got no brakes, that's boo ****." Awesome. Don't give up all of the rants Jr.!

Intangibles...some drivers have it, some don't. The great drivers and CC's know when to yell and cuss, and when to bite their tongues. It's not always constructive to yell at your team.

It's too bad JR couldn't have hooked up with Letarte like 10 years ago, because it sure seems like Steve's got JR focused and committed like never before.

I like Jr, but he's definitely not the most well-spoken guy out there. If he ever gets offered a commentator job after he retires, Lord help us.
And that's one of the reasons I like him. He talks like one of us would in front of millions um well huh..........He is a good guy would fit right in with our tailgaters or at your home .
Jr. on ebay would be like my wife buying the lottery ticket each week. a buck or two for us would equal his spending on ebay.

an ebay addiction doesn't mean he isn't smart with his money. as it is likely small ticket items. Jr is very smart with his money. He has talked about how he runs his NW teams, they are very careful and don't over spend. if the program doesn't pay for itself they don't do it. sounds simple. I suspect most of this is a result of dale Sr actually being kinda hard on him as a kid. Jr worked at a oil and lube dealership for crying out loud as a kid. Jr is more knowledgeable about his car than most. listen to his detailed comments about whats going on with the car and some parts they tried. you will not hear this from JJ never heard jeff gordon talk about it. of the top guys in our sport that actually know themselves about details of their cars. I would say kyle busch probably most knowledgeable. dale jr, brad k and a couple others. the rest of the guys most of them don't have a clue what teams are doing to the cars. beyond wedge and trackbar.

never seen a story of Jr building a car, or working on a car project. all i really catch from Jr is what the car is doing, never options to fix it. and don't fool yourself Rick brings alot to his Nationwide team, it's not all Jr. just because he has more of it, doesn't mean he doesn't waste money.

Sure, he worked as a mechanic when he was younger but that doesn't mean that he's knowledgeable about the mechanical side and setups of a NASCAR car. All it means is he knows how to fix a regular passenger car

He must be a fraud and banned from NASCAR all-time for not being a true car guy.
