A telephone company in Kentucky was running new lines to the rural areas and wanting to keep with company policy of bidding, opened two identical bids.
One bid was from a company from Wisconsin and the other from an Arkansas company.
In an effort to determine who would get the job, the telephone company got the two competitors together and explained they were going to send the two teams out to see which group could install the most poles in a normal working day, the winner receiving the contract.
The day came and as the crew from Wisconsin came in the company boss asked how many poles they had installed, they replied, "twelve".
One hour later, the team from Arkansas came in and told the boss they had installed two poles.
The phone company boss said, "two poles ??!!! the guys from Wisconsin put in twelve."
The Arkansas guy looked over and said, "no wonder. Di'jew see how much they left outa the groun??"
