Ten Things I Hate About You, NASCAR

Good article but as one of the comments said Brian won't read this much less do anything about it.

And neither will I. The constant vitriol towards NASCAR is non-stop these days and all I can say is if people hate it so much, why in the hell do they continue to abuse themselves by watching it? They've got to be masochists to continue this behavior.

I agree with #'s 1, 3, 4, and 10, but the rest are just filling space for the writer. Perhaps if I were writing a column every week it would take a creative imagination to keep ones head above water.;)

The thing is Buck, that most of us who complain don't watch it any more. The night race at Bristol has always been one of my favorite races. I used to plan parties around it. Last night, I didn't even watch more than a few laps. I actually planned my schedule around watching the Browns preseason game. I still care about the sport of racing mostly because I've been a fan for so long, but I don't love it like I used to. There hasn't been much point in watching for a long time now because Jeff Gordon is building up a commanding lead only to watch NASCAR take it away from him in an effort to manufacture competition with the playoff system. As a long-time fan of Jeff Gordon, I should be rivited to the tube like I was in 2001 enjoying the hell out of the run he is on. But now, I am in a holding pattern until NASCAR tells me performance counts again.

I have to agree with the writer of this article on points number 3 (my biggest gripe) and number 7 (a very close second).

3. The Chase. Excitement cannot be manufactured. Note to NASCAR: We know it’s fake. If you’re 600+ points behind the point leader with ten to go, there’s probably a reason-like you haven’t performed as well as he has-and you do NOT deserve the championship. Period. Yet they have points handed to them for their substandard performance and pretend they were contenders all along. Don’t try to sell me on that. Tenth or twelfth place is an impressive season-but not a championship run. Let the REAL championship caliber teams fight it out. We got a champion who flat didn’t deserve it one year, and one cheated out of the closest title margin in history (although at least the real winner got to take home the trophy) another. The Chase has worked out once in three years. Only in baseball should you be considered a success if you fail two out of three times.

7. Marketing to the wrong audience. The fans NASCAR has attracted in the recent growth spurt are all well and good; some will no doubt become diehard fans. But many I fear are simply latching onto a trend, and will move on once the next big thing rolls around. By catering to this new breed of fan and ignoring the fans who have always been there, NASCAR is creating a precarious situation. Someday they might turn around and find there’s nobody left.

(Could MMA or Mixed Martial Arts and it's growing popularity be part of where they are already going?)

I agree with #3. Let the drivers that have done the best the whole year go for it, and not someone who got lucky to get in and just happaned to get their act togather the last 10 races

I agree with pretty much all of it. I have only been a fan for a few years and I feel it has changed a bunch just in the short time I have watched. The chase almost lost me when it started up but I had nothing else to watch during the NHL off season.
