  • Terry Labonte to run Daytona 500: Just as they did to begin the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season last year, FAS Lane Racing announced they are heading to Daytona for the 2012 season opening race with Terry Labonte. The two time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion will pilot the #32 Ford in the running of the Daytona 500. In addition to the team and driver reunion, FAS Lane Racing welcomes back C & J Energy Services as the Primary Sponsor for the annual season opener at the Daytona International Speedway. C&J Energy Services, a Corpus Christi, Texas founded company, will continue their support of their "Hometown Hero" Terry Labonte, born and raised in Corpus Christi, as he will pilot the #32 C&J Energy Services Ford. The trio of FAS Lane Racing, Terry Labonte and C&J Energy Services joined forces for a handful of races last season and collectively they look forward to kicking off the 2012 season together. "It is a great privilege for our FAS Lane Racing team to be heading to Daytona once again with Terry Labonte and have C & J Energy join us again this season," stated team owner Frank Stoddard. "We had a solid Top 15 run last year for the Daytona 500 with Terry and that really set the tone for our whole season. The entire organization has worked hard during the off season to improve and grow our team and another great performance to start the season is expected."(FAS Lane Racing / Integrity Sports Marketing)(2-15-2012)

I think what set the tone for their whole season was Terry's past champions provisionals.

There is a family connection with Terry and C+J Energy.

Terry is not being used by anyone.

Teams are doing anything to attract sponsors. The Labonte name does that. Finishing 15th is no small feat at Daytona.

Seems that more and more drivers are being guaranteed starting spots in the 500. I'd really like to see who is vying for a starting spot that hasn't got a guaranteed spot.

Dave Blaney?Because Baldwin took his points from last year to put Danica in the race this year.Is the #32 in the top 35?

Some more odd owners points 'swaps? UPDATE: hearing that Frank Stoddard, owner of the #32 FAS Lane Racing team, has worked out a deal where the #55 Michael Waltrip Racing team [Mark Martin and Michael Waltrip as drivers] gets the 2011 owners points and a guaranteed starting spot in the Daytona 500 and next four races. Supposedly Terry Labonte will be the driver of the #32 Ford in the Daytona 500 and will have the past champions provisional to use if needed. Then the twist....after the Daytona 500, the #32 takes over the #6 owners points and will be guaranteed the next four races after the Daytona 500. This is all contingent on NASCAR's approval.(2-13-2012)
UPDATE: More points swapping and acquisition between race teams has landed veteran Mark Martin with a guaranteed starting position in this year's Daytona 500. Michael Waltrip Racing has worked out an agreement to transfer points from the FasLane Racing team to the #55 Toyota that Martin will pilot in 25 races this season.

So Terry will use the Past Champs Prov? But Bill Elliot is entered for the 500 also in Nemachecks car.Who gets to use that Past Champs Prov then?

I think it's the most recent past champion gets to use the provisional.

I can't remember having all this point swapping going on. It's a big game of musical chairs where the drivers trying to make it get screwed.

Sad thing is I can't remember back that far to figure out who is the most recent.

Man hes got it made there. Pay him to show up for one race and the next week when all the other guys are busting butt over to the next track hes kicked back in his recliner watching it on tv taking a nap. :beerbang: good retirement.

Terry gets the past champions provisional. He was Champion in 1996. Bill Elliot is not guaranteed a starting spot in the 500, unless Terry makes the race on time. If that happens then Bill will be next in line to use the past champion's provisional.

Like a kid with a new toy! ;)

As far as Terry & Elliott goes.....

Total respect to all of those drivers that put in their time to make NASCAR what it is today but seriously if it weren't for the advantage of the guaranteed starting position my hope would be that they would get some younger talent in these cars. That being said, congrats to Terry for making the show! How said is it that I can make that statement a week before the qualifying should be set?

Terry is a multiple time cup champion . I love to see him race and will look forward to it. By the way, I used to watch Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicolas playing golf long after they had to qualify to get in.Golf seems to have some repect for their past champions , it appears we don't.

If this is in response to my post then its meaning was lost on you. It has nothing to do with respect. It has everything to do with buying your way into this race. IMO that's exactly what we are seeing again. I've been a fan long before Elliott or Labonte entered the Cup ranks and certainly do have respect for what they've done for the sport.

Just as sad to say the same for 35 other drivers not named Terry Labonte.

I just think that if Senior were alive and was using the champions provisional , everybody would be loving it. Terry and Bill get this 'buying their way in ' thing .For me ..I am happy as hell if they get in , any way they can.

If Senior were still alive he wouldn't be running around in the rear and using up past champs prov.He would have retired at the top of his game, ran DEI with Jr still there and winning races.

There's no way Sr would step into lesser equiptment to just ride around. He would probably wreck trying to win with a 20th place car until no owner asked him anyone.

So? What are you saying? Taking a champions provisional would be beneath Earnhardt and rather than swallow his pride , he would let his team and sponsors down and withdraw from the race? Up here , we call that hogwash.

Sr would be running his own ride if not an RCR ride. Thats it.

As a long time Earnhardt fan I couldn't disagree more. That would have been as sad to see as it was watching Ol' DW using it week after week. A sad ending to a great career and unfortunately has become one of the things that DW is remembered for in many minds.

Who knows what would have happened had Earnhardt ever lived long enough to be in that situation? It's all speculation, nothing more.

Past Champion Provisional. What did you think I meant? :D

I thought you were talking about J Mayfield there for a minute when you said non competitive. But I was like PCP, what? He does meth. I got confused.

Im a little under the weather today. Neurons not connecting right.

hahahahahaha

I've heard people say Terry was too old and uncompetitive before. Then he went out and won another championship.I'm not sayin it's going to happen this year , but lets not write him off too early again.

At least he doesn't win by cheating like some folks in the news today.

I think that Terry is a very accomplished driver and is not really all that old. The problem with him is that owners these days are looking for that cute, sexy kid that can sell products.
