UTA is hosting its 10th annual “Texas Autocross Weekend” on July 10. The event will take
place on the big parking lot at the corner of Cooper and Mitchell on the south side of the UTA
campus. If you are not familiar with this form of racing, what we do is to setup traffic cones
in some pattern of sweepers, hairpins, slaloms, and chicanes; let everyone walk it several
times and then run the course. There will be one car racing the clock. Best time out of three
runs will be your score. The fastest time wins.
The cars will be the Formula SAE cars that are built for a national or international event held
at different locations in the states and around the world. The cars are designed and built by
university students and can be entered in the competition for one year only. Therefore we try
to find other places that we can drive the cars. Texas Autocross Weekend came about in 2001
when we intended to invite Texas and Oklahoma schools to our campus for driving on
Saturday, and then we would enter a scheduled event hosted by the Sports Car Club of
America on Sunday. I made the announcement on a forum for FSAE and we had cars
showing up from as far away as Canada the first year!
This year will be our biggest event ever. We have 35 cars from 14 different universities with
105 drivers entered and 166 students attending. The schools are the U of Texas at Arlington,
U of Texas at Austin, U of Texas at San Antonio, Texas A & M, Texas Tech, U of Oklahoma,
U of Kansas, Kansas State U, Wichita State U, U of South Florida, Iowa State U, U of New
Mexico, U of Missouri – Columbia, and U of Windsor Canada.
These cars are powered by motorcycle engines up to 600cc and are each very unique and
creative. There will be a hybrid electric FSAE car here as well. These cars are fast. When
we attend the SCCA National event, a FSAE car is in the top five of the fastest cars in
America out of a field of 1200 drivers. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to see these
cars and meet these bright students.
The action gets started at 9 am and will run until 5 pm and you can come at any time. There
will be a break at noon for a Texas – style BBQ hosted by Arnold Petsche. If you let me
know you will be here for lunch, I will put you on the list for a BBQ. There will be several
show cars here throughout the day.
