Always a favorite of mine! Thing is you really have to have lived in a small New England town, or any small town anywhere I imagine, to appreciate small town pd back in the 60's.
Many, many stories about the draft boards back then.



CBS, IIRC, interviewed Arlo a couple years ago, in the church just down from the real Alice's restaurant... and the ballad is a true story. He and his buddy were arrested for littering... and two months later when he reported for the draft, in his final screening... a colonel actually told him that they didn't need HIS kind in the army.
The church? It's now the Guthrie center. Sort of a museum, hangout, place to play music, and on Thanksgiving... they serve free meals!
 
I have this record album. Haven't played it for a while, so thinks for reminding me.

Back when I was in college radio we used to play this whole thing several times before the school shut for Thanksgiving break. Plus it's one of those great songs to play when you need a pit stop...
